Have I just done something stupid?!!

I just received a marketing email from Klarna. I have never signed up to it, but I read a news story quite recently that some online retailers use Klarna in the background to process card payments and the company sent out newsletters to people like me who had bought from such retailers without using Klarna's installments or whatever it is they offer, so assumed that's how they'd got my email address.

Then I did something that I now think might have been fucking stupid a bit risky: I saw the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email and thoughtlessly clicked on it. Was taken to a "sorry to see you go" message. But what if it wasn't Klarna?! Could it have been a phishing scam and by following the link I've compromised my data? And what data might that be?! What can I do?

Did you have to provide any info to unsubscribe? If not, you’re fine.

Run your anti virus to detect any malware of you are worried.

No, I just clicked the link (which was in tiny grey writing at the bottom as usual; the email wasn't inviting me to click anything) and it said sorry to see you go, you won't receive any more marketing emails but can still log into your account (what account?!)

I just use a tablet and I don't know about any anti virus software. But you think that if I didn't provide any information, it should be okay?

I hope someone more knowledgeable can reassure you . I did a quick google and it’s sometimes a risk an unknown link can expose you to malware , but hopefully not in this case. The article I read did teach me its important to always check a trusted site though.

Strikemepink · 08/06/2021 07:45

I’m sure it’s fine. The unsubscribe is always in little text hidden away at the bottom because companies don’t want you to unsubscribe from their marketing but are legally obliged to allow you to.

If you are worried, change your passwords on your main accounts.

If it was just a click then it re directed you to 'sorry to see you go' you'll be fine. IME anyway.

what you need to do every time you get an email is to check the sender email. Anyone can use whatever name they like in emails (which is how scams usually get you) but the email address can't be changed. If it's @klarna.com or whatever matches their website, you're fine.

Secondly.. you can't just click links and give over your information. It doesn't work like that. You can click links and download a virus file (off a website, not an email), you can download virus attachments or you may be lead to a form asking for your payment details.

It sounds like you're fine, but get into the habit of checking the sender email address

Btw klarna is a payment system and lots of companies use it. This is unrelated to their credit service. It's likely you bought something from an online store, left the 'subscribe me to emails from ...' box checked and they've enrolled you in their email marketing.
The message about your account will just be a catch all

Not to cause further alarm but klarna is apparently fairly easy to use for fraud. I would be checking with their actual page that someone hasn't made an account on your behalf.

I do this with emails from PayPal at the least and have actually spotted and reported scam emails to them. I don't know why I just believed this was Klarna when I've never knowingly used them. But it's good to hear that just clicking something isn't really dangerous, so thanks for the reassurance.

This is bad to hear! (But thanks) I'm going see about getting in touch with them and ask if they sent the email. Hopefully they did.
