Working from home, I have received two calls on my landline. It's bloody annoying as I have a torn cartilage and it's painful to get up. The first was purporting to be from Amazon, a female voice with a strong accent, and when I asked what she wanted to speak to me about it went silent and I hung up.
Just now, answered it again (am expecting a call from a friend so this is why I am answering it) to be told it was "Sam Cooper" from Amazon, with a very strong East Asian accent, asking me if I had bought a gift card totalling £40.00 from my account and I said no, I hadn't. I thought I would keep him on to see what he was going to say next.
He used my name and said that this card had been bought on my account and delivered to an address in London. He then said "You are at XXX address am I correct?" I live in Barnsley. He gave my full address.
I then told him I had bought no such card, was putting the phone down now and would check my Amazon account myself. Of course, there is nothing there. I knew there wouldn't be.
I've had several calls in the past, and when answering find a disembodied voice telling me my Amazon Prime account has been debited with something in the region of £80 but I just hang up.
But it was disconcerting to have my name and address read back to me. It is so easy to see how older and vulnerable people fall for this.
Has it happened to anyone else? I still feel shaken that they know my name and address.
