Nut free school, is "may contain nuts" ok?

My daughters primary school is a nut free school. Can I put something in her lunch that doesn't contain nuts but says "may contain nuts" ?

Most stuff says "may contain nuts" to cover the businesses who make it, not because there's a serious chance of nuts being present

OK. Pretty confusing then!

It's fine. My DD's best friend is anaphylactic to nuts and it really is a cover all. So yes, unless it clearly contains nuts then it is ok. Not quite the same but remember pesto is not as it contains pine nuts.

Pine nuts are a seed and often OK for tree nut or peanut allergy sufferers. Lots of ready made pestos contain cheaper cashews, however, which are not.

I think may contains is fine to take in but I am amazed that an allergy nurse is saying it’s fine to eat those products if someone has an allergy. They do still pose a risk if ingested even if that is a small one - that’s why the warning is there.
An allergy nurse said it’s fine for my dd to eat that and she does. Allergy to all tree nuts and peanuts, reactions so far have been itchy throat and hives, hope it stays that way 🤞 Reactions to actual nuts not the “may” contain

You need to ask the school. I have experience of one school saying 'may contain' was fine, one saying 'may contain' was not fine.

Whatever the school says you should follow, the very strict school was because the child had a very serious allergy.

It really isn't, it's just back covering. I would give any school that demanded such foods not be brought in very short thrift! With a child allergic to dairy and egg, if you banish 'may contain nuts' on top of that, there's really very little left to eat except for fresh vegetables!

I've accidentally sent in pesto pasta forgetting about the nut content. My mind is on spreads and things like Nakd bars. DS has now grown out of multiple allergies, so it is awkward to remember that some of his safe sources of protien are not suitable to take in. He did eat "mays" as his diet was already heavily restricted.

The chances of an allergy being sensitive enough to be triggered by a contamination by someone else's "may contain" product is incredibly low and not worth the heavy restriction to everyone else unless necessary to a specific individual.
