Multiplication Tables Check

KindergartenKop · 06/06/2021 16:00

My DS is doing a pilot of the MTC this year. I was just wondering if there was a 'pass' mark like with the phonics test? And if so, what is it?
Thanks 😊

Bump??

I don’t even know what this is. Dd is in Y3.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/06/2021 20:34

Hasn't there been a times table in Yr4 for a few years now? DD1 was happy it didn't happen last year (dyslexia so rote learning is hard work)

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/06/2021 20:36

Last year was the first year but the tests were cancelled. I assume there is a pass mark but I don't know what it is.

KindergartenKop · 06/06/2021 20:50

@mindutopia it's a test at the end of Y4 to check multiplication knowledge up to 12x12. They have 25 questions and 6 secs to answer each one. The idea is to encourage kids to learn them by rote to make more advanced maths easier later on. I think it's going to be mandatory next year and my kids' school is trying it out this year. It's the maths equivalent of the phonics test basically!

There is no pass mark.

Serena1977 · 06/06/2021 20:56

Up to each school to decide, not compulsory.
Anytime in June for current year 4.

Multiplication and division up to and including 12 times table.

60 random questions in 3 minutes on a laptop/tablet.

It is 25 questions and it will only be multiplication facts.
falgelednl · 06/06/2021 21:17

Yes, not mandatory until next year but schools can sign up this year.
As you said, OP, it is 25 questions with 6 seconds to answer each one. Only multiplication (not division) and weighted to ‘harder’ tables.
To ‘pass’ you have to get 25/25. Data will be available to the school but primarily it’s being touted as an assessment tool to identify how school is doing regarding the teaching of times tables.
I’ve already told my HT my assessment - we don’t teach times tables very well until year 4 and need to do something about that!
My class like the URBrainy MTC to practise if anyone wants to have a go and see what it’s like!

Such a good idea!

Winkywonkydonkey · 06/06/2021 22:03

I wonder how many I'd get. I get rusty with my 7s and 8s Blush

KindergartenKop · 06/06/2021 22:07

@Winkywonkydonkey yes, my Y4 child is better at times tables than me now! I still have a gcse in maths though, so I can pretend to be better at Maths than him for at least another 6 years.

When dd1 was at the beginning of yr4 (pre-covid) they told us it was 100% pass/fail.
Obviously she didn't end up doing it but I was extremely impressed at how quickly hers improved with practise.

KindergartenKop · 06/06/2021 22:21

It's the 6 second limit that makes me (and DS) panic. I gave him a big list of times tables and 3 mins to do them all in and he did about 51 correctly but 6 seconds induces panic!

Embarrassingly, I have a PhD in a maths related discipline but I let the computer do it all nowadays!

TeenMinusTests · 07/06/2021 07:34

OP. If your DS knows his times tables then the 6second timing is somewhat arbitrary, and the result doesn't matter anyway.

My DD1 is old enough to have had mental maths in her y6 SATs. She could do the maths, but processing issues meant she hadn't a hope in the timescales. It didn't hold her back in secondary.

KindergartenKop · 07/06/2021 18:35

@TeenMinusTests I know the 6seconds doesn't matter in the long run but I was worried he might feel like a failure if he doesn't pass. But it seems like passing (25/25) is pretty difficult anyway so never mind!

If he knows his timetables and just panics about the time, I'd get him to play hit the button to increase his speed. It's a free website - just Google it.

GiantToadstool · 07/06/2021 18:46

Our school has been drilling them for this pretry much from yr 2 and so chose to sit it for yr4.

But 100% pass!?!? What if you mistype one!?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 07/06/2021 19:19

Does his school not subscribe to times tables rockstars? No idea if they have a free trial for parents or how much it costs.

It has one setting that is very similar to the test, and when you play other games (studio mainly) it records speed as well so you can get an idea of how quick he is and which times tables he struggles with. DD averages 2 seconds per question so technically she should be fine.

KindergartenKop · 07/06/2021 19:32

@AccidentallyOnPurpose he does play on TTRs. He loves it and has definitely made progress!
