What apps really improve your life?

I discovered 'Waze' yesterday thanks to a post on here and it was really good on a car journey so it got me wondering about what other hidden gems can genuinely improve life!

I use:

NutraCheck: A calorie counter that has info about pretty much everything for sale in the UK and gives nutritional information to help me eat better. I'm slimmer and healthier for using this app.

Tile: This is linked with little 'tiles' that you put on your keys/wallet. Never, ever having to search for keys or wallet has genuinely taken a huge burden off this disorganised person.

PD: Period tracker. Thinking of changing it since they updated their calendar as I find it confusing but it's sooo useful to know when my period's due.

Indeed jobs app. Bit specific but it has my previous searches saved so just tells me if there are any new jobs in my categories. I'm keeping an eye on the market rather than hunting so it's a big time saver.

DuoLingo. I'm keeping up my French and have started Scottish Gaelic which is amazing! It's been a great lockdown hobby too.

(I also use apps for banking, social and shopping.)

What are yours?

Alarmy- you have to do things to switch the alarm off e.g. take a photo solve a maths puzzle and my favourite-shake your phone multiple times.

Fit Bit - also has a period tracker

Color Note - so simple, no gimmicks, different coloured post it notes that you can pin on your phone. Been using it for 5 years, my whole life is on Color Note.

Lots of HIIT apps I have never used.

Readly - requires a subscription but you can read every UK magazine online.

Cronometer - like MFP and good if you are serious about tracking nutrition.

Speech Notes - one of the best free dictation apps.

I also find going into the Settings of my phone and apps, there is so much personalisation. I use grey scale, do not disturb etc.

Changed my life - I married someone I met on tinder 🤣

Too good to go app is good, I've had a few food bargains from it.

I don't know if Widgets count but I have direct call for DH & each of our kids, also a direct text with DH and one for myself - the latter is essentially a note book for absolutely anything I want to remember long term.

Tiny Decisions - whatever topic I spin the wheel and the random selection is what I do next (whether it be which project to pick up that day or what soup to cook for lunch). it stops procrastination & agonising over choices

Duolingo - I'm learning Spanish and Italian I Translator apps for both, much quicker than Google and they work both ways so English to Spanish and vica versa

Scrabble Word Checker

I stopped WW last March because of lockdown but it was brilliant until then.

Colour Mixer - for dyeing yarn

Hydro - water intake tracker (I'm not consistent, but that's not the app's fault)

Trello. Lists on steroids.

You can colour code, add notifications, share, set tasks and dates etc.

It links my phone, iPad, desktop and laptop so if I think of something it goes on the list and I can pick it up anywhere.

One list has multiple columns: first jobs on hold; next column jobs up and coming with dates, third column, jobs t o be completed this week, last column jobs that need to be invoiced. Once a job is finished I drag and drop it into the last column.

Also have lists for home stuff like booking dentist, ordering gas, emailing school etc.

You can move items on the list into different rows or up and down by dragging and dropping.

I have multiple lists of work, general house admin, birthday dates and ideas, menus etc.

Cannot live without it now. I never miss a thing now.

I don't work for trello, I just love it.

musthavebeenlove · 06/06/2021 14:42

I have even used it to find female friends @gurglebelly and it worked as I have found a close friend there. We’re both straight btw.

Audible for audiobooks
Canva can design anything on there for 9.99 a month I use it for my small businesses to design cards and adverts.

I envy people (in a healthy way😁) who can keep digital calendars! DH is like you, everything on apps and reminds etc.

my brain needs analogue organising, handwritten lists, charts, notebook, physical reminders and default systems. I just can't remember otherwise!
But I so wish apps worked for me! (They don't)

your recommendation sounds fab

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 06/06/2021 14:55

MindPal it's brain training and tbh I never realised how bad my memory was until I started it and it is improving day after day. Citymapper was a godsend when I lived in London, credit karma, couch25k, Ovia

RigaBalsam · 06/06/2021 15:08

Strava for running and walking.

Is Nutra better than my fitness pal?

FeatheredHope · 06/06/2021 15:19

Thank you @Sparklingbrook it sounds like Medisafe could completely change my life by making the constant stress of dealing with my mother’s daily medications easier to manage. Thank you.

One set of apps that have improved mine are the Down Dog yoga range. They have a collection of exercise apps including yoga, Barre, HIIT and Meditation. They are so easier to use whenever you want a quick workout and you can choose how long you have, areas to focus on etc. Super handy.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 06/06/2021 15:20

What3Words - app to be located in an emergency

That's ok. We haven't needed it for a while so hope nothing has changed, it really did simplify things when there's a big tablet regime. I don't know where we found it thinking back. The nurse at the time had never heard of it.

I use Amila calender for tracking my periods. I chose it because it seemed to be the only one that wasn't covered with pictures of pink babies. I use it to not get pregnant.
