gum around wisdom tooth-painful!

I am requiring advice and help please. I have an impacted lower wisdom tooth that hasn't caused me any issues since it came through years and years ago.

I went to the dentist 3 weeks ago as it was throbbing and hurting around the tooth. He said it was infected and prescribed metronidazole antibiotics. These seemed to ease things but there was still some soreness.
The pain and soreness continued so I went back to the dentist to be told it wasn't infected anymore and to just use salt water rinses and it will eventually go away. The dentist said that there have to be certain conditions met to consider a removal of wisdom tooth and he didn't want to go down that route if possible.

Two weeks later I am still in pain with it, the gum above the tooth is swollen and sore.
Does it sound like pericoronitis? Anyone have any advice?

If it is infected again (which is likely with it being impacted) you will need it extracted.

Speak to your dentist again if possible!

I’ve just had one out that was impacted. The relief is immense!
Not saying have it done, mine was very sore, but it’s been amazing for me

I was always told that if an impacted wisdom tooth keeps getting infected that it needs to be removed. I'd keep going back and push for a plan going forward

I've managed painful wisdom teeth for years, lots of swilling with salt water at a hint of pain. It is very effective. So if you've been trying that properly but there's still pain I'd go back to the dentist.

Thanks, I will try and get an appointment tomorrow and see what they say.

So fed up of it Sad

I had this, antibiotics prescribed as it was pericoronitis multiple times
You had to have it twice in a 12 month period to have it extracted as there is a big problem with it causing nerve damage and they like to see if it sorts itself out
It seemed to really flare up 13/14 months apart so not fitting criteria
Eventually it just came through and no problems since but was years

@LemonandGingerTeafor2 nerve damage to lower or top wisdom
