I called the police and I feel like a tit now

I'm not even sure why I'm posting but I'm still shook up and I need to get this out of my head.

I live with my 2 young boys. Both of them fast asleep in bed about an hour ago. I was in bed messing about on my phone. DS1 bedroom is above the kitchen. My bedroom is at the front of the house.

Clear as day I heard the sound of window being smashed. It sounded like MY kitchen window. It woke DS1 up too. I went into his room to check out of his window which is directly above the kitchen. I had my phone in my hand and in my panic I called the police.

I was on the phone to operator, I was totally shaking and trembling. DS1 was frightened and crying. Operator tells me to check the house. I was still shaking like a leaf at this point but I went downstairs and my kitchen window is fine. All the windows are fine. I checked my shed as it has large windows. All fine. I checked my car (parked at the front of the house). No problems there. Police operator takes my details and tells me to lock all windows and doors and to call back if anything else happens. They can't send anyone out as it looks like there is nothing to inspect.

After I hung up the call, I went out again to check the neighbours houses and again, nothing.

I looked out of DS1 bedroom window again to check NDNs conservatory (neighbour lives alone and she is out at the mo). Nothing.

Ds1 had climbed into my bed by this point and Ds2 had also woken up and got in my bed too. I had to calm eldest down as he was still frightened. He said it sounded like the kitchen window so I told him I'd checked and it wasnt.

What on earth was it? It took a while for me to get kids back to sleep. Theres no evidence of any of the houses on this street being broken into. But it was so loud and crystal clear I was convinced my kitchen window had been broken in to. So loud it woke ds1 up! What the hell was it???

I did apologise to the police operator as I felt like I was wasting their time, but being a single parent I cacked my pants and when I called them I was upstairs with no idea if someone had broken in or not. I panicked. I can still hear the sound of the glass breaking replaying in my head.

I dont know why I posted this, I'm still shaking.

I agree that there is a difference to the sound of a big pane of glass than a bottle.

Much deeper, lower noise.

Waking up to breaking glass is my a splitter nightmare and it’s happened 3 times in this house. First time was a window breaking next door (accident from the inside... the person was drunk but we didn’t know all the details until a few days later). 2nd and 3rd times were things breaking inside. One was a large mixing bowl that had been drip drying on the side after a wash.. around 2am it just fell I guess. 3rd one was also something breaking inside though I can’t remember what it was. All times I’ve had 999 on my phone ready to press ring.
Sometimes I hear the sound in my sleep now, I’ve absolutely become paranoid that I’ll hear it again and this time won’t be something so innocent.

I once called the police at 5am as I heard what I thought was definite kicking a door in. About two weeks earlier a house three doors up was burgled (with the occupants in bed). The burglars were armed and the family had to barricade themselves in their child's bedroom until the police arrived. All for keys to a car that wasn't even theirs it was just parked outside their house. The whole street was super cautious after that. So when I heard the banging I just hit 999. Three police cars whizzed up in minutes and it turned out it was another neighbour walloping something in his shed. At 5am?? Anyway I felt like an utter tit but the officers said I'd made the right call and they did add they were sat with their feet up as a long night shift drew to a close and they were happy to have something to do with the prospect of overtime if it was a 'proper job' 😂

@chesirecat99

If it makes you feel any better, one of my neighbours in my building had a loud party so another neighbour banged on their window to tell them to be quiet as they weren't answering the door. A third neighbour thought it was someone was banging on her bedroom window (on the 3rd floor) and ran into the street screaming, straight into the arms of an armed police office. Two armed police officers then searched the entire building doing that back to back formation thing with their guns up Grin

If it makes you feel better...

I was young, single and had just moved into my first ever house with my newborn baby. We were fast asleep in the middle of the night when loud hammering on the front door woke me up. I tried to ignore it but it just got louder and more frantic, followed by shouting, two aggressive male voices through the letter box and footsteps around the back of the house.
I was too terrified to move, or even peak out of the window. So I called my parents, who raced over in the car and flagged down a police car on the way.
They all turned up to the horrifying site of drumroll an ambulance crew who had been sent to the wrong address.

I had the police come and save me from an ambulance crew. Confused

Are you sure you didn’t doze off and it wasn’t a audible hallucination? I’ve had a couple of these and they are incredibly real sounding at the time!

@Flaunch

if you read OP's posts you wouldn't have asked that.
her child and her neighbour also heard the noise

MustardRose · 06/06/2021 20:07

Do any of your neighbours have a greenhouse?

partyatthepalace · 06/06/2021 20:31

Don’t feel silly, you reacted on instinct - breaking glass in the middle of the night - not unreasonable at all.

BertieBotts · 06/06/2021 20:38

At least your neighbour heard it as well! I wonder what it was!

Kulio · 06/06/2021 21:07

Launch- I was wide awake at the time it happened, it was half ten at night and I was playing on my phone. My son and ndn heard it. Definitely sounded like a window breaking.

No idea what it was, I guess I'll never know.

I was going to suggest the inner glass on your oven door - but I doubt your neighbour would have heard that!

Mine exploded one day, it was like a bomb going off!

kiksta · 06/06/2021 21:31

Sometimes I hear breaking glass and it sounds like a window but turns out to be the neighbours throwing empty bottles into their glass bins 😄
