Should I run or shouldn’t I?

I used to really like running.

Then I had a massive baby via forceps, 3rd degree tear, rectocele, enterocele, mild cystocele - fucked, basically. I was very lucky not to become faecally incontinent. Just another centimetre and it could’ve been a different story.

Had nine months of physio on my pelvic floor and was told never to run or do heavy lifting again, because if I did I could have a prolapse and be incontinent.

So for seven years I haven’t run at all. And I miss it.

Four years ago I had private surgery to repair everything. But my surgeon gave similar advice - avoid any exercise that has micro impacts, like running. Don’t lift weights, etc.

Thing is, I hear anecdotally that it’s fine to run if you’ve had prolapse or rectocele surgery. A few women I know have had birth injuries and kept up running.

But I have my physio’s words ringing round my head. She told me even if I was okay running now, when I hit menopause and all my ligaments lose their flex, that’s when those chickens can come home to roost and I’ll wish I’d never started.

If you were me would you risk running again? Have you been in a similar situation and it’s been fine? Or did you go back to running and regret it? I would love to be able to run again but am terrified I’ll end up pissing or shitting myself uncontrollably. It’s already touch and go as it is!

I haven't been in your situation, and I dont know anyone who has either.

But this:

"But I have my physio’s words ringing round my head. She told me even if I was okay running now, when I hit menopause and all my ligaments lose their flex, that’s when those chickens can come home to roost and I’ll wish I’d never started."

..is enough to make me say if I were in your situation i would follow the physio's advice.

Could they advise you of alternatives you could try?

What about cycling instead?
I really wouldn't risk taking up running again.

TaraR2020 · 05/06/2021 23:12

Agree with @kiksta and your surgeon said the same..Seriously, why would you risk it??

I don't think anyone here would tell you you're ok to go against such strong medical advice Hmm

Seek a third medical opinion though if wish.

I clicked on this thread thinking you were asking if you should run away! I'll get my coat...and running shoes.🤦

@kiksta are you in the uk? Did your surgery go well? Can I ask how much you paid as I need a rectocele repair and am looking to go private as am desperate

I’d do (and I do) strength training instead. My physio also advised against running.

Merlott · 21/09/2022 20:53

There are different ways of running though. Did physio say to avoid walking? E.g. speed walking?

Try Dr Matt Minard for a different perspective on running form. Safety and avoiding injury must be your priority but you ought also to be able to gently strengthen your body and enjoy it.

Am I ask how your surgery went was it 100 percent successful and do you reccomend.
