Street Boot Sales

Has anyone done one? Is it worth it?
They seem to be a thing in the villages around here and I thought it might be a good way to get rid of clutter. In a large village 50 houses signed up though ours would be much smaller.
You don't have to load stuff in your car, just put it out at the gate.
I've never done a car boot, nor even been to one.

I’ve only ever done 2 car boot sales, never been to one to look to buy things. I wouldn’t ever do one again.
It was a PITA frankly. All that time spent sorting, people want stuff for pence & we didn’t get rid of half as much stuff as we hoped so ended up taking loads home again.
When I say people want things for pence, they really do. They want stuff for 50p that you could get £5 for for scrap! People were rude and sneery too. No idea what a street one would be like.

It's like the concept of the yard sale in the US isn't it.

I think it's definitely good if you want to clear out some old stuff. We live in Germany and they have a day twice a year where anyone on the street can put their old junk out on the kerb. It stays there for 24 hours and the neighbours or anyone else walking past can look through and take anything they like. The next morning a big truck comes and takes the leftovers away to the tip. You are not allowed to leave building rubble out (considered commercial waste) or anything harmful like chemicals, and electronic items are technically not allowed - although metal scavengers tend to take them anyway.

It works really well! I think the concept of the yard/street sale could work similarly in terms of being an opportunity to clear stuff out. Just don't charge too much - if you know you can get a fiver for scrap then keep it back (or consider the cost of petrol, time and effort and just let it go for 50p).

Probably works even better if you advertise to local friends/family to come and have a nose or put up posters in the local area.

Oh that doesn't sound good.
At least if you are selling from the gate you don't have to haul it home again.
I have a lot of plants whcih I thought of selling for charity. Plus of course endless stuff in the loft.

Cross posted.
It's stuff I would have taken to the charity shop, only they are overwhelmed with lockdown clearouts. Plus you can never park near enough.

We did one recently.. a bit quiet although I had a few bits for sale ( at very low prices) and mostly gave away things free. Got rid of most of the free stuff that was well presented. Had a few bits just thrown in a box that weren't labelled, as have little DC and an unhelpful DH. If you can be organised you'll do ok, but won't be making millions. Made about £30.

A garage sale?
They happen here too.
People post what kind of stuff they are selling or giving away and what time the stuff will be available then presumably charity shop or tip the rest.
The stuff ranges from outgrown baby clothes and toys to people with excess plants and furniture because they are moving to a smaller house.
We also have an annual garage sale day on our estate so people can visit several in one go. An organizer posts which streets to visit for stuff

They call them Jumble Trails round my way (South London). A few streets get together, agree a date and those that want to sell set up outside their house. I think they are fairly popular. A lot of Londoners don't have cars so can't actually get to car boot sales. I haven't done one because I live in a block of flats but I think the idea is a good one.

Hax · 05/06/2021 16:14

I guess it's the same as a garage day sale.
I would be happy to pretty much give away a lot, say clothes / soft furnishings. I have some furniture that I would rather a charity shop raised money than just give away.

Are you on FB? Our local page has people collecting for the homeless (houseware), anima charities (old blankets etc) or playgroups (ride on, old toys like Lego )
