Raging hayfever

Anyone else? It’s really bad, keep waking up at 5am feeling like I have flu with itchy eyes to boot, and everywhere we go to walk the dog is thick with pollen, she comes back covered in the stuff. It’s everywhere and there’s no escape and it’s miserable!
Just venting really, but if anyone has any great tips please let me know!

Antihistamines every morning, nasal spray twice a day, eyedrops twice a day. Without fail, even on cloudy days, as it helps build up resistance. Dab of vaseline inside your nostrils to stop pollen going up. Avoid going out between about 5-7 if you can, that's my worst time. I don't have a dog but can you hose them down after every walk? You have my sympathy, hay fever is the worst!

Shieldingending · 05/06/2021 07:52

You have my sympathy... I’m the same and it’s awful. What do you take? I have fexofenadine which is the best antihistamine I’ve tried, but it only really helps if I take 2x the dosage! Got a docs app on Friday to see if I can get any help x

Wow amazing tips there thanks! I’m only taking a loratidine once a day tablet. Yes we wash the dog after each walk 😂 I will try the Vaseline and eye wash today. Off to a posh do today and not looking forward to battling the pollen all day

Do you use any nose spray alongside the Fexofenadine? I take it too and have some points through the summer when it's just not enough. I've found using nose spray and taking 2 chlorpheniramine also helps a lot, it's only 4 mg but taken with fexo and the nose spray makes it more bearable.

I find taking a loratidine in the morning and a cetirizine at night (both once a day tablets) did the job for me. A pharmacist suggested it when I wanted to avoid drowsy medication but needed something stronger.

Oneearringlost · 05/06/2021 08:17

If anti histamines done work ask you GP for Montelukast ( it targets different inflammatory mediators), it doesn't make you drowsy, is actually used for asthma in children so v safe. It revolutionised my appalling hay fever which completely ruined every single summer. The flu feeling is when your body is SO flooded with histamine and other inflammatory mediators that it's like walking through treacle. Grim, good luck

Oneearringlost · 05/06/2021 08:24

Meant to add that I tried diligently applying all the nasal sprays, strong anti histamines to no effect. Some hayfever is just so intransigent. The only thing that helped before montelukast ( Singulair) was sniffling my son's emergency supply of steroids for asthma) Now I start Montelukast in late April and summer is a breeze and a pleasure ( son aged 19 who gets bad hayfever and asthma is also on Montelukast and it's revolutionised his hay fever too. But it's only on prescription.

snaffling

cheeseisthebest · 05/06/2021 08:31

Me too. I have fexofenadine can i take 2 tablets?
Is montelukast stronger?

idontlikealdi · 05/06/2021 08:40

Me too today it has really kicked in.

I take Lortadine and beconase twice a day EVERY day during hay fever season otherwise I never get back on top of it.

PomegranateSeed · 05/06/2021 08:41

I take Fexofenadine am and loratadine pm. I have been since February. If you keep on them you antihistamine levels will build up. Watch out for certain foods and alcohol that also increase histamine levels.

Bagelsandbrie · 05/06/2021 08:47

Ask GP for fexofenadine 180mg.

TheSockMonster · 05/06/2021 08:52

I feel for you.

In addition to what’s already been recommended:

  • Wash the pollen out of your hair before bed
  • Don’t open bedroom windows. If you must then keep the curtains shut to catch some of the pollen and replace your pillowcase before bed
  • Don’t touch your face or eyes. If you must touch your face or eyes wash your hands thoroughly first
TheSockMonster · 05/06/2021 08:52

One more!

  • wear sunglasses or clear glasses when outside

Same here...

Doc kindly reduced my dosage last week and now its not doing anything, so back I go

Shieldingending · 05/06/2021 10:45

What nasal sprays do people find effective please? Maybe I should add that in alongside the fexofenadine

MissingTheMoonlight · 05/06/2021 10:51

Grass pollen is crazy high here in the south west right now.
My list for atopic DS is:
Sunglasses on, vaseline in nostrils, anti histamines, keep doors closed, air filtration system, keep off grass!

jacqelinedaniels · 06/06/2021 16:51

Thanks all for the tips! I’ve not been nearly as proactive as needed so will be off the the chemists this week to stock up and the Vaseline is already helping a lot. Can’t keep windows shut in this heat but yes curtains shut washing hair etc and coping as best can. My hayfever is always bad in early summer, and by august I’m fine - just as DH’s hayfever kicks off! We are clearly affected by different pollens.
