She's currently re-reading the Harry Potter books, the first of the Northern Lights series is her school reading book & she's recently read the Percy Jackson series, followed by Heroes of Olympus.

Any suggestions based on those, for something else she can try?

Sabriel trilogy

The Mister Monday Garth Nix series

Alex Rider

I also loved Diana Wynne Jones books at that age. E.g. the Christomancy series or the Power of Three

Thank you so much! We did try looking together earlier but she gets a bit overwhelmed & tells me it doesn't matter about looking instead of picking something.

‘Children of blood and bone’ and completely different type of thing but ‘Jemima Small versus the universe’. I work in a secondary school and a number of year 7 girls have loved both of these.

Didiusfalco · 04/06/2021 19:59

She might also like the ‘A curse so dark and lonely’ series and Karen McManus - ‘one of us is lying’.

autumnkate · 04/06/2021 20:09

Hunger Games

TheWashingMachine · 04/06/2021 20:12

Animal Farm.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 04/06/2021 20:13

Spiderwick Chronicles

At that age DD liked some books mentioned here, especially Alex Rider series. Also Ruby Redfort series, Murder Most Unladylike series (both a bit more light-hearted) Also has she read Wonder?

Armi · 04/06/2021 21:20

Voyage of the Sparrowhawk.

Summerzz123 · 04/06/2021 21:23

Refugee by Alan gratz
Fleshmarket Nicola Morgan

DD loves all these books and is currently obsessed with Jonathan Stroud.

As pps have mentioned, she also loved Alex Rider, Ruby Redfort, the Murder Most Unladylike books and the Hunger Games books.

Diana Wynne Jones wasn't such a hit with her (to my massive disappointment) but she did like Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising sequence.

Holes by Louis Sachar - brilliant book
Blackhearts in Battersea - steam punk mystery
The Thief Lord and Inkheart both by Cornelia Funke - slightly magical

hels71 · 04/06/2021 21:27

The Charlie Bone books by Jenny Nimmo

Serpenta · 04/06/2021 21:35

Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs
Rooftoppers - Katherine Rundell
The Red Necklace - Sally Gardner
Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman

I've ordered Sabriel - as much for myself as dd Grin looks right up my street. And, she found Wolf Boy (Rob Lloyd Jones) so I've bought a copy of that too.

We'll sit down and have a look at the others tomorrow and see if having a list to look up from helps.

Miss Peregrine appeals to me as well, so maybe I'll buy that 'for me' and share 🤣

Another vote for Noughts and Crosses. Brilliant twist.

Also Hunger games and Jonathan Stroud

InvincibleInvisibility · 07/06/2021 11:00

Also to bear in mind for age 13/14 (depending on maturity) is the book Junk by Melvin Burgess.

Excellent book about the effects of drugs on teenagers (must read to the end cos at the beginning sounds fun but as the book goes on you can see the really negative impacts).

I read it and told my mum (secondary school librarian) that everyone should read it. Really powerful (but maybe for parents to read first to check for age suitability)

Georgieporgie29 · 07/06/2021 13:08

Septimus heap books by Angie sage

Okbutnotgreat · 07/06/2021 13:33

Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter. Several girls in DDs class are currently reading them and there are seven series at least.

Cowbells · 07/06/2021 16:03

I agree Noughts and Crosses is great. Maolire Blackman is a great storyteller.

VenusClapTrap · 07/06/2021 16:07

My dd same age is currently enjoying the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series and Terry Pratchett.

monkeycat · 07/06/2021 16:17

If she liked Percy Jackson then Rick Riordan also wrote an Egyptian series ( the Kane Chronicles?) and a Nordic series ( can't remember what they were called) which my girls both enjoyed at this age.

Also , classics like Anne of Green Gables.

The Chris Riddell 'Goth Girl' series are great , as are some of Neil Gaiman's children's book such as 'Fortunately the milk' and 'The Graveyard Book'.

KeflavikAirport · 07/06/2021 16:45

Ursula le Guin’s Earthsea trilogy.

MaisyMary77 · 07/06/2021 17:17

Defiantly Ursula le Guin’s Earthsea trilogy! Fantastic stuff.

The Dark is Rising series by Susann Cooper
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Weirdstone of Brisengarmen series by Alan Garner
