Strangers barefoot in your house?

Out of curiosity how would you feel if you had employed someone for a service to be done in your house (beauty related) and they took their shoes off at the door and had bare feet walking around your house. Would you feel grossed out by that, or not bothered?

Now that it's summer I'm wearing sandals all the time, which means going bare feet In clients homes. But I've just been thinking - should I bring a pair of socks with me to put on rather than going bare feet? I wouldn't be bothered with this if someone came into my house with bare feet. But am now wondering how everyone else feels about it? 🤷‍♀️

I think it's polite to take your shoes off at the door. I'd rather that than someone traipsing mud on the carpets.

StarryStarrySocks · 04/06/2021 15:55

I would be fine with this! I think the state of my floors would be worse than the state of someone's feet!

TTCfirsttimer · 04/06/2021 15:56

I'd be grossed out tbh!! I'd take socks or indoor slippers and put those on at the door. That way if the client is opposed to either outdoor shoes or bare feet (or both) you're covered!

Chamomileteaplease · 04/06/2021 15:56

I would ask each householder.

Some would be thinking ooh gross, that woman's sweat is all over my floor and some wouldn't think about it for a second Smile. I am trying to think of what my reaction would be but I think it would depend on how much I liked you Grin.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 04/06/2021 15:58

Hahaha ok thanks. I actually quite dislike being barefoot because my feet are always cold, so if I go to a friends house I always bring socks. But it's summer now so I don't have the cold feet issue. I would always take off my shoes though. Will continue to bring socks, but just wondered if the person would think I'm weird

It wouldn't bother me, but take a little pair of cotton socks or a pair of indoor flip flops? Just in case.

OhRene · 04/06/2021 16:00

I'm a shoes ON household and would be grossed out by bare feet (I hate feet!) but if someone feels more comfortable with shoes off in my house then that's fine. I'm happy to ignore it.

I will also take my shoes off in Shoes OFF households without question too.

But to address your question, yes I would prefer they bring socks or slippers if they had the option. That way all bases are covered. The householder can have their no shoes rule and there are no gross bare feet on the floors. You're also not likely to pick up their verrucas by covering your feet!

milinhas · 04/06/2021 16:00

I would take socks anyway - who knows when they last cleaned their floor!!

MrsWidgerysLodger · 04/06/2021 16:02

We're a shoes off house but I also hate feet so if you wore a pair of ballet shor style slippers or cotton socks I'd be very grateful!

Chunkymenrock · 04/06/2021 16:05

It's a yuk from me! Take socks!

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/06/2021 16:06

I’d be fine with that. But I’m barefoot as much as possible. You’d be more than welcome here with your toes out.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/06/2021 16:07

our last cleaner used to walk around bare feet. never thought anything about it, not an issue.
the others would be barefeet or socks upstairs (carpet), but would put on their flipflops for downstairs (tiles).

I don't think any of the builders were ever barefoot. they'd either wear socks or cover theirs shoes.

tbh I take more of an issue with one of my kids feet. socks or not they stink! I often send him to wash his feet after school, so I don't puke

ScottishNewbie · 04/06/2021 16:42

I have a no shoes in the house policy.
I don't want dirt and mud being tracked through my carpets. I also have two indoor only cats who I don't want exposed to worms etc from other animal faeces.

I think it's polite to remove your shoes as a default, and then leave it to your host to insist/make it clear it's okay that you keep them on.

I was raised in NZ where this is normal...so I know that clouds my opinion a bit Smile

I always take my shoes off in anyone's house including mine

I’d take indoor shoes. My cleaner comes in ans changes her shoes immediately.

PattyPan · 04/06/2021 17:00

Not bothered at all. Feet aren’t gross and if they are it’s caused by shoes! (Bunions etc) So going barefoot is always better as far as I’m concerned, unless they actually have something infectious like athletes foot that you’re worried they’ll spread.

ComDummings · 04/06/2021 17:02

I think socks or shoe covers are best

thelegohooverer · 04/06/2021 17:06

I’d be grossed out by your feet - not because of your skin/sweat on my floor but just the fact of your feet being bare. That’s entirely my issue though.
I think you’re very considerate to be wondering about this!

RestingCatsBumFace · 04/06/2021 17:09

I take shoes off except in a house where they wear shoes indoors.

Not amused at visitors leaving dents in wooden floors with their stilletos so would provide trainer socks or similar. I wouldn't want to wear slippers that someone else had worn and not keen on bare sweaty feet.

I would take socks.

OrangePowder · 04/06/2021 17:09

Personally I wouldn't expect anyone visiting my house in a professional capacity to remove their shoes. Currently I have carers four times a day, the district nurse three times a week and various other support coming through here. None remove their shoes. Should they?

Elieza · 04/06/2021 17:35

If you are ‘working’ within someone’s house I’d suggest health and safety would mean you should wear some kind of shoes. So you can’t stand on something jaggy they have dropped like a drawing pin etc!

I’d take clean soled house shoes with me.

OrchidLass · 04/06/2021 17:37

I would use those little ballet type slippers.

PreservativeFree · 04/06/2021 17:39

Is it really usual for professionals, in and out of homes all day to remove their shoes?

ShanghaiDiva · 04/06/2021 17:39

Would not bother me. We are a shoes off household.
I lived overseas for 25 years in countries where shoes off was the norm.
I would expect anyone who comes to my home in a professional capacity to have shoe covers.

Shoe covers were the norm when I lived in Asia.
