Best/worst places about where you live

Afternoon everyone

What's the best and worst things about the area/town/street you live on

Feel free to divulge as much as you like without giving away your door number and street name. Haha.

I am from a town in Hampshire, England.

Best

  1. We are one hour train or drive from london
  2. I have several cafes, takeaways, corner shops, salon and the infant school on my door step.
  3. The street is okay ish. Apart from my busy body neighbour.
  4. Close to other busy shopping cities which is ideal for a big shopping spree.
  5. Nearby villages with museums, farms and quite big parks.
  6. The best chinese buffet restaurant in the world is only 4 mins drive away.
  7. A fairly good hospital where I have given birth is 15 mins drive.
  8. Not far from Portsmouth or Bournemouth too for trips to the beach.
  9. Some very nice restaurants but far too many imo

Worst

  1. Busy body neighbour literally has nothing better to do than call council for kids playing and having fun. And a lot more too.
  2. The towns rubbish. We had so much shops. Now it's just boots and a billion restaurants.
  3. The buses come every 4 years.
  4. The senior school closest to us isn't great. Hoping it will improve. Excellent headteacher but terrible experience of bullying for my children. Looking to take him out and send him elsewhere.
  5. There is no local soft play but the parks and museums make up for it.
  6. To get to the big town by bus takes a decade.
  7. Quite a lot of drunkards and drug addicts have surfaced throughout the last 5 to 10 years. So when you go to town you have to dodge a group of people shivering and shaking on the payment after taking whatever in a syringe and then passing out next to the curb but not on the pavement. Literally on the road next to the banks off their faces.

Looking to move by next year.

Now let's hear where you're at ladies!

Best:

Beautiful

9yo can walk to school as it's 3 minutes away, no roads to cross.

Primary school very good.

Secondary school in catchment very good, even 2nd+ 3rd on the list are good.

We're in walking distance to everything: shops, work, restaurants, old part of the city, library, pool.

It's on the coast 10 minute walk to the beach, can take DC there after school, walk the dog in winter.

20 minute drive to a small airport with affordable UK flights.

Crime relatively low.

Big emphasis on sports, in particular for teenage girls, I know many who do sport for fun, not just to compete.

Worst:

Cockroach hell (nuts etc are imported from Brazil, along with their fauna), luckily but a problem in my area, but some places have huge infestations (they climb up your legs when you're out having a beer with friends, fly, cronch loudly underfoot if you're not looking where you're going). Mucho boak.

Tourists (in a usual year).

It's not Barcelona. I miss Barcelona.

I wanted to live where you live until I got to the cockroach part. Who knew! 🥴

Nice suburb of Manchester

PROs
Close to Manchester. Can get there easily by train or tram.
Close to lovely countryside and 3 National Trust properties. Some nice country pubs within a few mins drive.
Close to the airport without being under the flight path.
Close to motorway networks.
Excellent schools
Lots of nice bars, restaurants (and 2 cinemas) in walking distance
CONS
House prices are high and have got ridiculous recently - we couldn't afford our house now
The feel of the place has changed. It used to be mixed but now the restaurants seem to be full of flash self important people.

The burbs of Sussex
Pros:
Lovely primary school
Not far to seaside by car/train or bus
Decent train service to London
Lots of sport for kids
I like my house, we moved from a shitty bit of south east london
House prices hold their value well
Lots of nice neighbours who are friendly but not OTT.
School mums are nice.

Cons:
Town centre is basic
I don’t drive and life would be easier if I did (can’t afford to learn)
Parking can be a bit tricksy as new build and parking limited
We are very much in the low wage bracket for here, most are city husbands and the mums are sahm/work part time. The full time working mums tend to be high fliers. We both work full time and need to to have our modest home.

The best things about living where I am are:

Close to Heathrow and not far from Southampton airports for holidays (and not that far from Gatwick either)
Good rail links to London and the other direction like Winchester and Salisbury but bus links are somewhat rubbish
Close to a canal which is a gateway to great walks/runs and cycle ride options
Well performing schools in town and sixth form colleges within easy commuting

Worst

Didn't bother me, but a lot of people don't like the fact that we don't have our own sixth form in the town
Rubbish shops - despite being an affluent area and people have spending money none of the chains like Fat Face or Crew Clothing will open here
Somewhat snobbish aspirational middle class types
And the very worst - the ruling district council coalition want a 10,000 home new town on a green field site about 400m from the town's border. There won't be affordable housing - on another new development nearby (thankfully brown field) houses are selling for up to a million. I can categorically say they aren't worth it.

Intrigued as to why 3 or 4 supermarkets close by is a good thing. Why do you need more than 1?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/06/2021 15:29

I live in a large town in the East Midlands.

Best:

Houses are affordable.
Public transport is great with easy access to 2 cities. Trains to London in 90 minutes.
Some lovely green spaces not too far away.

Worst
High Street is shit.
Lot of poverty.
Tory MP.
Traffic is atrocious.
My neighbours over the road sell drugs.

crapbagmikecrapbag · 05/06/2021 17:00

Small city in the south west of England

Best things:
Absolutely beautiful place
Green spaces everywhere
Transport links are good, including rail, road and access to airport.
Good schools, lots of choice
Decent entertainment and shopping

Worst:
House prices are ridiculous
Lots of tourists (usually)
New clean air zone has made my commute a misery as lorries are using my route as a way to avoid charges
Traffic in general is bad
Lots of new builds, but mostly aimed at students

HelebethH · 05/06/2021 17:43

HelplessProcastinator I think we live in the same place. I would add to the list,
Best - lovely park
Worst - rubbish.
