Coughing toddler

rantypantss · 03/06/2021 17:45

Anyone got any tips on how I can I help my toddler who can't stop coughing?

We have a Covid test pending. He has a very slight temp, but eating and drinking, going to the toilet as normal etc.

The poor thing just cannot stop with his tickly dry cough. He's been up since 4am and is absolutely exhausted, but he can't drop off to sleep because of the constant coughing.

Ive tried calcough and have olbas oil going in the electric diffuser. Any other ideas please?

Oh bless. No advice but I'm following. We're in the same boat with our 4 year old. Temp and coughing continously. Waiting on Covid test results!

Witchesbelazy · 03/06/2021 18:12

Whole family but me have this , covid tests negative. Feel your pain

Aquamarine1029 · 03/06/2021 18:13

I would shut off that diffuser and use a humidifier.

Our pharmacist basically said all the over the counter medicines for coughs are BS and to ride it out, which we did. But yea the nighttime awake coughing is painful for all!

musicalfrog · 03/06/2021 18:16

Olbas oil is really good for clearing blocked noses. But we find it causes us to cough more.

ItsSnowJokes · 03/06/2021 18:25

There is a nightmare cough going around. We have had 3 covid tests on our 4 year old and all negative. Went to the GP and no infection, they advised bronchostop and calpol. We also have a diffuser that I have put in tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender and camphor essential oils in and that has helped the past couple of nights. It has been 2 weeks so far though. I hope it goes soon.

If you don’t have a humidifier, try hanging wet clothes/towels on a clothes airer, to get some dampness in the air. And/or run a hot bath so that the bathroom gets nice and steamy and sit with him on your lap (on a chair or the loo, not in the bath!), reading books or playing with a toy.

Vicks on the feet at bedtime, with socks over. And if old enough piriton can help.

TheVolturi · 03/06/2021 18:32

Should have said, soles of feet

TiggeryBear · 03/06/2021 18:33

My 5 year old has had a negative covid test & has been coughing persistently. We've tried with some success, Piriton as I've noticed that I've been coughing when my hay-fever tablets wear off.

Our 3 year old has a cough (tested negative for covid) and we tried paediatric linctus (I think) and it seems to have done the trick in easing it for him. DP got it over the counter at the chemist.

I hope your DS feels better soon.

Baby vicks on soles of feet, socks on, in bed. No idea why it works but it does.

Also, sounds counterintuitive but if it's a croupy cough cold air can help. A&E doc told me recently with my little one, he improved greatly from ambulance to A&E and she said cold air helps the cough. That if it's bad take them outside in middle of night will calm it. Obviously wrap them up warm though!

My 7 year old had a horrible cough last week- thankfully only lost a day waiting for a test result - also negative, theres definitely a nasty cough doing the rounds thats not covid.

Getting her to sleep slightly sat up helped. Lots of water.

Jay2790 · 03/06/2021 18:50

Great advice above. Try holding him upright while he sleeps on you, if that's possible?

Oly4 · 03/06/2021 18:52

Vicks on chest, Covid test, doc if no better

Bobbiepin · 03/06/2021 18:54

Is he sneezing too? Our dd has hay-fever and the post nasal drip makes her cough terribly. Antihistamines help a lot!

rantypantss · 03/06/2021 19:00

Thanks all. Diffuser is off - he's had a warm bath and vicks on his feet, and he's finally fallen asleep!! We don't have a dehumidifier but I'm off to put a wash on Smile

Same boat here. Just sent my 5 year old DDs test off. The cough is like nothing I have known before. Temperature too. I have a gut feeling it ISN'T covid though as she is better now. Test was ordered Tuesday night, received today but she is now bouncing off walls and much better.
DDs cough was so bad she couldn't get a sip of her drink between coughs.

Add a pillow so he is slightly raised when he goes to bed. Vicks on chest and feet (I don't know if the feet bit works but I did anything I could try)
And honestly, lots of cuddles to ride it out. Its not nice.

Hope results are negative and the cough goes very soon. The worst of DDs lasted 2 days.

ChateauMargaux · 03/06/2021 20:31

Good to hear the warm bath, vicks on feet and stopping the diffuser worked.

When we have endless coughs that the doctor has ruled out needing antibiotics we use a honey and onion remedy, high doses of vitamin C and plantago tincture. And if the COVID test is negative and the coughing continues, an osteopath might be able to help.

Dinkydody · 03/06/2021 21:10

Simple honey and lemon for a dry cough. Hope it doesn’t last long. Seems like grandkids are just getting rid of coughs and colds and other virus is waiting to pounce.
