Which Fiesta?

1.0 Ecotec or 1.25 Zetec?

All other things being equal, which engine should I go for? From what I understand the 1.0 Ecotec is the better option, I'm just nervous having had a 1.4 for so long and it seems a big step down.

Thanks for any reassurance or advice Smile

I’ve got a 1,0 eco boost and it’s fantastic. The best car I’ve had, hands down. It leaves Dh’s 1.4 fiesta standing.

Don't worry about small petrol engines in modern cars. I had a 1 litre Fabia estate and it was actually quite fast and powerful. It could well be a decent engine.

I have a 1.0 eco boost too its great.

Ok, sounds promising Grin

I'm looking at ones around 5 to 6 years old (so 7th gen, not the current one) if that makes a difference.

Incidentally secondhand Fiesta prices have gone up a lot since i last bought one!

Mine is five years old. I prefer the look to the new one.

All secondhand car prices have gone up a lot I think. It's a bit like the house market -- lots of pent-up demand causing price inflation. My car is currently 'worth' £2,000 more than I paid for it 18 months ago! (Although it's quite an unusual car.)

1.0 Fiestas are good. The engine's punchy, it's quite fun to drive and has quite a bit of character.

There are loads of them around so you can afford to be picky -- not just on colour and spec but also condition. Look for one that has been properly serviced, has good MOT history and whatnot.

Purple I prefer the mark 7 to the new-shape one too.

IloveJudgeJudy · 03/06/2021 11:15

I've had a 1.0 Fabia and now have a 1.0 Seat Ibiza. Until I'd driven them I wouldn't have believed how powerful they can be (obviously not compared to DH's 2.0 Mondeo). They can accelerate up an incline with 4 adults in the car.

Jenjenn · 03/06/2021 12:27

Mine is 8 years old and to be honest I have noticed that it isn't quite a punchy compared to what it was new and is struggling with very steep hills a bit now. Only 45k miles on the clock by the way... my point is that while I love mine I would replace with one max 2-3 years old.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 03/06/2021 13:00

I had a 59 reg 1.6 Fiesta and when it came to getting a new one, got the 1.0 ecoboost having been told it was comparable and I wouldnt know the difference - it was utter shite to the point where I got rid after a year.

That sounds like the turbo isn't producing sufficient pressure. Maybe a split or loose air hose.

Other possibility: there's a vacuum pump that is part of the brake system; counterintuitively, it has sensors in it that are to do with engine power. You can test it: with the engine running and the car stationary, press the brake pedal quickly five times. If it goes hard underfoot then there's a problem with the vacuum pump. If not, might be the air hose(s).

Worth getting checked out, likely a cheaper fix than a whole new car!

I have a 8 year old ecoboost as well and mine is going great, with about 65k on the clock She is a fantastic car. Have driven from top to bottom of the UK several times and I'm not a slow driver. I used to have a 1.7 Puma and I'd say easily comparable in terms of performance. The engine won international engine of the year 2 (?) years in a row, beating a ferrari IIRC.

Thanks everyone, had a test drive this afternoon (including a couple of motorway junctions) and it seemed fine so Ive taken the plunge!

My lovely oldie has done me well for 7 years (and is now 13) but it's time to move on.
