Bags on seats: Coronavirus edition

Is it ok to have a seat for your bag nowadays?

All seats on the train were deemed usable by the train company fwiw.

Lots of small (preschool and early primary) children left standing, in awe of the holy seated bag.

You aren’t supposed to sit beside someone not from your household or bubble so the seat will be empty anyway.

I am someone who has always been against bags on seats, it really annoys me, I’ve even made of a point of choosing seats with bags before just to make a point, but it seems a bit pointless atm.

There are signs up everywhere on public transport saying leave space, do not sit beside people you are not with, so I think it is fine because nobody should sit there anyway.

At the moment I thought you're not supposed to sit next to someone, so I would say it's currently allowed.

But it sounds like your rail company has made its own rules and you can sit down next to someone. In those circumstances if there were loads of people standing and someone's bag had a seat I would tell them to move it.

If someone does that to me when the carriage is half empty I move seats.

I think that right now, most people will understand those wanting to be cautious by having a spare seat next to them and generally wouldn’t ask anyone to move a bag (though I’ve seen people ask on the London tube and rail network where it’s now getting busy enough that having a spare seat next to you is utterly pointless as it just means a higher number of people standing in a crowd right in front of you.)

It’s just guidance about distancing on public transport, isn’t it? It hasn’t been remotely possible to stand a metre apart from anyone on a train in London since about February.

I wouldn’t do it if the carriage was half empty, but if it was more than 75%-80% full bags on seats is completely unacceptable and often if I was alone I would choose a seat with a bag over another empty seat.

This is in London, the train was full enough that she already had 6 or 7 people within 2 metres. It was nice to see the trains busy again. Half term and sunshine has brought everyone out.

There were no signs saying about leaving empty seats and all other seats were taken. I think buses still have their signs up. Buses have been taking so few people lately that I've been leaving them for people who desperately need the spot (key workers/old people) and either walking or not making the journey.

It's really bloody irresponsible of train companies to have removed passenger limits while cases continue to rise.

Hundreds of strangers packed in like sardines and the Indian Variant - what could possibly go wrong?

How do you propose the many millions of people who don’t have a car (or can’t afford to pay to park it all day) get to work, drop and collect their children at school, or get to and from any of the now perfectly legal events and activities available? Transport operators are, quite rightly, responding to demand.

Me too. At the moment I’d also move if someone tried to sit next to me - bag or no bag.
