Second hand iPhone

moonagedaydreamer · 03/06/2021 08:53

I need to upgrade my iPhone 6s but I can't afford a new one. I only have it on payg because of low usage
Where is the best place to buy one for a reasonable price. I'm very cautious of Facebook market place and eBay because of the possibility of them being dodgy/stolen
Does anyone have any advice or pointers?
Thank you

Personally I’d never buy one. Their lifespans are so short, chances are you’d only get a few months out of it anyway and have no warranty. I’ve never had an iPhone last longer than 18-24m before it dying and I don’t do anything special to them!

I’d prefer to get a cheaper new brand of another type of phone over a second hand iPhone. They’re notorious for having very little longevity.

You don't have a friend or relation who upgrades more regularly who might sell you their old model?

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 03/06/2021 09:22

Mine was second hand 2 years ago (7s) and it’s still happy.

CEX was where I got mine. I actually got it in store but you can order online. Search function is a bit poor but prices are keen and you may be able to trade your old one for a bit towards it. They give you a one year warranty. Is it the cheapest? No but having the warranty and a physical store is worth the extra

We buy all our phones from eBay and never had a problem. I always choose business sellers with good feedback and usually get a 12 month warranty. Whether the warranties are any good or not I don't know as have never needed to try them!

AngusThermopyle · 03/06/2021 09:27

I second CEX, they give guarantees and you can choose between various grades of condition. You can also trade in your old phones against the purchase i think.

I’d go to CEX for peace of mind. I always keep my iPhones for the full 5 years until they’re no longer supported. I figure by buying them brand new I pay more but I get more years of use out of them, so it evens out. But if you can’t afford that then refurbished with a warranty will do.

You either have bad luck or you don’t look after them.

We’ve never had a iphone last less than 5 years.

DP gets the new model every other year, usually I will take his ‘old’ one that is two years old and give DS mine that is by that point 4 years old, we’ve been doing this for years and by the time DS is due an upgrade to my old one his phone is always still working fine and can be sold.

His current one is the fist one that he’s had any issues with, and that’s only because he dropped it and broke the screen, which we just paid £70 to fix, we will still be able to sell it when he’s due an upgrade though.

I've bought mine either reconditioned or shop-soiled on ebay with no problems at all. My Iphone 6 lasted five years. I now have an iphone xs. Just choose a retailer with good ratings and a good warranty and returns service.

I have bought two second hand iPhones very cheaply for teenage DC. The first one came via the private free for sales ads in a local newspaper, the second via a private seller on eBay. I made a judgement when I spoke to the first person on the phone and again when I went to their house to pick it up and pay that all was above board. With eBay, I looked very carefully at all their feedback, what else they had sold and were selling, and how they responded when I asked a few questions. No warranty of course, but luckily they have both been fine and, like I say, they were cheap. The pps' recommendations for CEX or from someone you know who is upgrading sound a good and easier bet and are possibly safer for your peace of mind. Battery health is important in a used phone.

We do this, and dd (dc2, 9) still has dh’s original iPhone from 2007 which she uses just as a hard drive to listen to audiobooks on.

Battery replacement from Apple costs £49 or £69 depending on model. If you factor that in a second hand phone can still be a bargain.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll definitely look at cex and maybe take another look at eBay
