I want to live by water!

How can I do it! I dream of falling asleep listening to the waves, or having my own boat on a lake at the end of my garden. I live south of England but we aren't loaded. Where on earth can I live my dream? And it's too cold for me up north ( Yorkshire lass by birth) so the stunning northern or Scottish coast is out.....
Oh and I've got 4 kids so we need space

I've been googling houseboats today. I would love to live on water.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 02/06/2021 21:49

North/west Welsh coast?

DeathByWalkies · 02/06/2021 21:51

South Wales coast? Some lovely places that are much cheaper than most of the south of England.

AlwaysLatte · 02/06/2021 21:53

We're on a narrow boat at the moment for half term. I can definitely see the attraction! (Maybe not in very windy weather though...)

JengaNonConfirming · 02/06/2021 21:55

Do it!! I've just moved to a small town, with 3 rivers, one just across the road from me. I walk by at least one of them everyday. It's not the sea, but it's lovely and I get to see lots of ducks and swans Smile

theskyispurple · 02/06/2021 22:02

@JengaNonConfirming where??????

Suffolk? I live at the top of a village on the river on the Essex/Suffolk border and have a river within a two minute drive, five beaches within 10-30mins drive and several more rivers. It's much cheaper than Berkshire which is where I lived before :) bought a kayak this year to get out on the water more!

Tewkesbury. Prone to a bit of flooding, but lovely!

OldTinHat · 02/06/2021 22:19

Isle of Wight?

waltzingparrot · 02/06/2021 22:23

You could get harbour views in Gosport

@JengaNonConfirming you’re brave, can you get house insurance ? I know a couple of businesses who now really struggle to get insured, beautiful place though.

scrambledcustard · 02/06/2021 22:29

I live semi rurally. I have a stream that runs under the house and comes out mid garden and there is a canal at the bottom of my back garden. Its lovely in the summer but then the fucking mosquitos come and I can't have my windows open so we all swelter Sad

lanalawr · 02/06/2021 22:34

This this this! I'd love to live by the sea. I grew up near the sea but now live in the city suburbs. I feel really ungrateful as we have a lovely house and have put a lot into updating it (bought off a 98 year old). Just been googling houses near where I grew up and they're way out of price range even if we could consider it.

How far from where you are are you willing to move? That'll dictate your options.

We've got insurance easily as our house flooded over 10 years ago (in the 2007 floods), which is the only time it flooded. Other parts flood regularly and some not at all.

@OldTinHat am
Seriously considering there... worried about the schools there though

By a canal, lots of houses back onto canals - you could keep a kayak at the end of the garden!

wetrainday · 03/06/2021 03:40

@theskyispurple how about the Channel
islands?
Living by the sea is the absolute dream!
