Australia, mice problem

Been reading about this ,and just wondering,..do they not have any natural predators? ..the photos are horrendous,there are just to many to deal with ,I know Australia has birds that nest on the ground ,so this is why no cats I expect..
Must be so awful to be in the middle of this ,.I read that the mice will end the plague themselves by ripping each other’s heads off ..
What conditions lead to this situation,is it a regular cycle and it’s just v bad this year ..would love to know more ,or hear from anyone in the thick of it ,and how they are coping ,I simply can’t imagine how awful it must be
@Nitpickpicnic I think you need to get a sense of humour...Do you really think it was a serious remark that we should ship out our cat population? Was obviously tongue in cheek 😂
@Poorlykitten

Yep, I 100% was sure that you guys were serious about sending us your cats. You mean you’re rescinding your offer? However will we cope without you guys sending over shipfulls of animals? You’re so mean! And if you do send cats, please ensure that they are healthy. Your username worries me a bit, and you know we have some pretty serious Quarantine Officers guarding our borders nowadays?

(hope that time the irony shone through better)

Poorlykitten · 03/06/2021 09:16

@Nitpickpicnic thank goodness for that. I do realise you Aussies are short on the humour gene. 😉

I was watching videos online it’s awful and absolutely fascinating in equal measure. My neighbours chicken feed is attracting rats around here atm. Counted 6 in the coop the other morning and I wondered how fast an infestation took hold which took me down the Australian mice worm hole.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/06/2021 09:39

I’m deadly serious about sending cars. My neighbours, who actually own the buggers might but not agree, but never mind.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/06/2021 10:01

So sorry for those like @FollowYourOwnNorthStar who are living this ATM. Aus does seem to be the land of Biblical Punishments ATM. Perhaps it's readying itself for the Second Coming. That'll pee of the Americans, they would have assumed Jesus would go there I'm sure. Love the idea of Jesus being a chilled surger dude a la Home and Away

If it’d help you out, by all means send your neighbour’s cats over. And/or their cars. While you’re at it, some Pet Dragons and wine wouldn’t go astray, either. Thanks!

@HeartvsBrain

MrsTerryPratchett, I had to look up the word "saltie" to see what it is. There were two definitions, so are Australians scared of Canadian sailors, or salt water crocodiles?
I looked up the word ‘taipan’ to see what’s so scary and google told me they’re “a foreigner who is head of a business in China”... terrifying! Grin

I saw a news pieces where they were chucking all the nice into a paddling pool of water where they will all ultimately drown and die. Was pretty gruesome but my eldest son said he would do the same as there were literally hundreds scampering around the house and into the childrens beds. I felt so sad though. The video of the mice floating in the pool dead or struggling to get out. It's an image I will never get out of my mind. Its actually making me feel sick and making my heart feel sad and heavy. It's a horrible situation.

@Dontforgetyourbrolly

Ex mil on her way ....she can lock food away without a trace . Those mice will soon give up when they realise she won't be giving them a crumb to eat!
The thing is, you don’t have to leave food out because they come inside no matter what. The family we have living in one affected area leaves absolutely no food or crumbs out at all yet they catch 150 mice a day in their living room.......

Canadians and foreigners terrifying.

Even Steve Irwin was scared of taipans. Look at his face!

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

Just saw that there is now a shortage of poison antidote across Australia. So vets are struggling if dogs or cats accidentally eat bait.

ladywriter1234 · 25/06/2021 18:14

I live in Australia. Melbourne. There are no plagues of mines. But lots of hipsters

Kpo58 · 25/06/2021 18:40

Wouldn't a plague of mines be against the UN convention or something? Shock
