Air conditioning and loft conversions

Evening - posting here for traffic.

If you have a loft conversion which has a bedroom do you:
A) have air conditioning and if so do you use it?
B) don’t have it but would install it if you had were starting again.

Help me settle an argument MN! Thanks

We have our bedroom in the loft. No air conditioning, and wouldn't install if we were starting again. There's no denying the room gets hot in the summer, but we've got a dyson air cool fan which is fabulous.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/06/2021 18:35

we have a ceiling fan light in every room, including the one in the loft.
never considered air conditioning, it's not hot often enough for that (Surrey).
the fan is great when it's hot

No air con and don’t need it. Windows open in the summer, a fan if necessary (same as other bedrooms if really hot)

No aircon and don't feel I need it. I have a velux over the stairs up to it and I think that helps channel out the heat.

The first floor is noticeably cooler since I have had that.

Geordieoldgirl · 02/06/2021 18:48

The air-conditioning in our loft has been a life-saver in the (to us) unbearable heat of summer nights in London. But we only thought about getting it after hearing a friend saying her loft is unusable at certain times, and she would definitely have it in if she was doing her loft again.

purplesequins · 02/06/2021 18:52

no aircon
the roof is well insulated and when we had the roof re-tiles we chose the lightest coloured roof tile available (light terracotta coloured) which helps a lot.

HermioneWeasley · 02/06/2021 18:55

No aircon and wouldn’t install. One or two days a year it gets really hot, but it’s manageable

Impatientwino · 02/06/2021 19:01

We don't have a loft conversion but we do have air con in our house both upstairs and downstairs. I absolutely adore it and I'd hate to be without it now in honesty. I worked from home pre covid so am basically always there! It's simple to control and makes such an enormous difference to us. Youngest DS room gets the brunt of the sun and before we had it his monitor registered 34 degrees in the height of summer. It has made those nights so much more comfortable for all of us. We don't have it on crazy cold just comfortable.

We have a lot of visitors (human and canine) when it's hot but it has ruined going away in the summer for us Grin

Impatientwino · 02/06/2021 19:03

The units double as a heater so we often use the downstairs one to warm the place up for 15 minutes first thing in the morning without switching the whole heating system on.

Pinkandwhiteblossom · 02/06/2021 19:22

Thank you!

Sadly you’re not helping the argument Grin

I want it but DH is resistant....I was hoping MN would back me up.

Is the Dyson cooling fan quiet?

Not a room in the loft but we have air con in our bedroom. Have done for 20 years and wouldn't be without it!

minipie · 02/06/2021 19:27

We don’t have a loft conversion but do have top floor rooms in the eaves with only dormer windows, so much the same I guess.

We considered putting in air con during our house refurb and decided against. No regrets. New roof insulation and double glazed windows have helped enormously with temperature regulation in those rooms. Like a PP we also have a velux over the stairs (remote control) which helps a lot.

We do have to be careful about keeping S facing windows/curtains shut on hot days and then opening up only once the main heat has gone, but it’s fine.

To be honest what decided us is that the outside box would have been very visible, and quite noisy, for our neighbours if they had their windows open (terraced house). Seemed a bit anti social. Also environmental concerns.

Hfjshdhs · 02/06/2021 19:29

In the summer heatwave last year our loft conversion was the coolest room in the house. We had the velux windows open and the balcony windows and there was a really nice breeze blowing through.

TeenMinusTests · 02/06/2021 19:37

No air conditioning and wouldn't bother.
Opening the windows lets the hot air out and creates a good updraught.

raspberryjamlove · 02/06/2021 19:38

We don't have a loft conversion but we have invested in air con this year throughout the house and I am loving it! My husband wasn't too convinced but absolutely loves it now. Worth the money imo m, like a pp said we don't have it freezing but so nice to have the rooms fresh :)

Impatientwino · 02/06/2021 19:39

@Pinkandwhiteblossom I'm backing you up Grin

I love mine! Friends that came to stay last summer just had theirs installed Grin

idontlikealdi · 02/06/2021 19:57

Depends where you are surely? Scotland no but in SE London in a terrace with a loft conversion absolutely yes.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 02/06/2021 20:07

The design of our house means the upstairs gets v warm and dd has sn so leaving windows open not really practical in terms of her safety.
We put aircon in and it’s been excellent. We usually just put it on to cool the upstairs before going to bed.

icklekid · 02/06/2021 20:09

Loft conversion but no air con and not bothered either - sorry doesn’t help your case. We have velux and juliet balcony- leave these open during the day and it’s perfectly cool by evening

OverTheRubicon · 02/06/2021 20:11

In our old place we were fine with a fan, other than a few hot days, but loft was north-east facing and I also spent most of my time in an air-conditioned office.

New place is south facing, I work from home, and if I had cash would install in a heartbeat, it's absolutely boiling.

runwithme · 02/06/2021 20:12

Our loft conversion when I was growing up had poor insulation - freezing in the winter, boiling in the summer. We had one put in a coupe of years ago and it is very different. Warms up nicely in the winter, and much cooler in the summer, especially with the velux windows at one end and the dormer at the other.

thisisbull · 02/06/2021 20:42

We had a loft room in our rented house and our bedroom was unusable when it was hot. If we did a conversion 100% we would get AC

Goodweatherforsnails · 02/06/2021 20:52

We just had big velux windows including one over the stairs which acts as a kind of chimney - works well 99% of the time. We do have a portable air conditioner unit that we use about a dozen nights a year, but I wouldn’t bother with a permanent installation.
