It's not really worth trying to sell on my unwanted books, is it?

Music Magpie doesn't want any of them & Ziffit's offering around 30p per book. That's an awful lot of books to make up their minimum of £5 to send to them.

I've no way of getting them to a charity shop, but doubt they'd want or need more books anyway.

I feel guilty at the thought of recycling them but cba with the thought of FB Marketplace or similar :(

They can stay a while longer.

What about a local care home / hospice/ hospital (do they have a library?)

PurpleMustang · 02/06/2021 12:22

Some hospitals (if you are near one) have the charity accommodation nearby, they may like them as some families stay a while

Last year I recycled over 300 books. My father is a book horder, nowhere or nobody would take them so into the recycling centre they went. It was sad but I was also glad to be rid of them.

My local libraries will take donations of books if they’re in good condition. My DC’s primary school will also take children’s books for their library.

As others have said, We Buy Books pay a bit better than Ziffit. Personally, I just take it on the chin, box them up and use Ziffit's free courier service to collect from my home (although I may use We Buy Books next time if they offer the same). Life's too short to faff about trying to sell things on ebay, and I just want space for all my new books!

There's always Freecyle, but that is hit and miss as to whether anyone's interested and no-shows etc. My local community centre has a shelf of books in the foyer for people ot help themselves to, might be worth seeing if there's anything similar near you. Better World Books is a charity which has bookbanks - check their website to see if there's one near you. If not, you can send your books up to their hub in Fife, but you would have to pay for the postage yourself.

Thank you all for the suggestions, I'll look into whether the local hospital/refuges etc may want them tomorrow.

Our school library's being re-fitted over the summer so I will ask the person dealing with that about the girls' unwanted books when we go back after half term. Dd2 tends to hold onto hers though & they're double stacked on her shelves 🙈

I think I need to upgrade my Kindle rather than buy more books!

I had a clear out and put lots of books on the wall outside my house and they all went, you could try boxing them up and putting them on Facebook market place and see if so time will collect them.

ScouseQueen · 02/06/2021 19:07

Get on an app like Next Door and ask if anyone on there wants them in your area, or if they know places locally that will take them. My local swimming pool has a book table and you can donate books or take any you want for free from the table.

At least two coffee shops in my small town have a book swap shelf, you could leave some one on of those.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/06/2021 19:24

I don't think so.
I have a lidded box by the fence with a sign above "Free books, please take what you like".

I did the same with shoes last year, and got rid of a bunch of colouring books & toys a few weeks ago (obv changed sign to suit).
Everything was gone within days - I'd put new stuff in as I went, sorting stuff took time.

I'll be doing this with everything from now on and told DH I'm calling it "Free Box"😁
I have dozens of gloves, hats, scarves to get rid of in the winter.
still have toys & books to sort.
we have hundreds of pencils, crayons, craft stuff.

I'm considering clothes too (baby & toddler), will probably do them as 4 or 5 items in a bag, labelled with age. not sure yet

All the local charity shops/hospices want books - second hand books have been in demand during the past year. I think lots of people have rediscovered their love of physical books during the past year. They've not been left on the shelves like they used to be.
