Best gift voucher for young couple?

Hi everyone, just looking for some advice re a suitable gift voucher as a wedding gift for a young couple. We live overseas and due to COVID are unable to attend their wedding, but would like to send a card and a gift voucher. My husband hasn’t lived in the UK for over 20 years and is out of touch, and although I’ve spent a lot of time there, I also have no idea where young couples in the UK like to shop.

If you were/are in your 20’s, a homeowner and getting married, where would you like to spend £100? Thank you everyone Flowers

Definitely not John Lewis.
I think Amazon would be very well received.

I’d have loved a John Lewis voucher. The washing machine packed up 3 days after we got married. Most expensive week of my life Grin

Is there another relative you could check with? Of my mid-20s DC, both would hate a restaurant voucher, one would love John Lewis and the other would prefer a voucher for an outdoors shop to stock up on camping equipment!

Alternatively to a voucher, if they’re drinkers a crate of nice wine could be welcome, or as you’re overseas a gift from your home country could be nice.

no, don't check with relatives. best to avoid any issues in the future because of what anyone suggested, even if they thought they were in the know. big mistake.

check with the couple.
they will know best what they want

Wow thank you all so much for your replies! I’m really grateful for your input. My husband wanted to put some money into their account but I felt it would probably just get lost on groceries, bills etc - which is practical but I wanted them to have something nice that they wouldn’t ordinarily buy for themselves. I’m going to check out John Lewis, and I hadn’t considered Next but have been in their shops before. Interesting not many recommendations for M&S - it’s the only department store my ex-pat husband seems to remember (he’s no shopper though Grin) Thanks again everyone, I hope your COVID restrictions continue to ease and you all have an awesome summer x DaffodilWine

A big no to Next and M&S. An aspirational 20 something wouldn't be seen dead shopping in either of those (other than M&S food).

Dunelm. John Lewis are over priced. I'd rather have cash though, then you can spend it anywhere.

FizzyPink · 03/06/2021 00:36

Please not a Buyagift hotel one. We received a deluxe two night break voucher but the only hotels it covers are absolute shitholes. Nothing deluxe about it.

MouseholeCat · 03/06/2021 01:58

A cheque, Amazon or John Lewis. We're just out of our 20's but I like cheques because we enjoyed buying things used or making things, and that meant we could be flexible.

If you do a cheque, don't do what a bunch of my relatives did though and assume that: 1. We'd have a joint bank account and 2. I'd be taking my husband's name on marriage!

MouseholeCat · 03/06/2021 01:58

Oh- or Etsy!

Dora26 · 03/06/2021 02:03

It isn’t a good idea to send cheques overseas - they take MONTHS to clear

Losttheequipment · 03/06/2021 03:30

Another vote for John Lewis. Amazon maybe, but I associate that with mundane day-to-day stuff. JL is a bit nicer for a gift.

And given all the shop closures, we are running out of other places to buy good quality home stuff a bit in this country.

lsjdkviwworin · 03/06/2021 04:05

I'd say definitely John Lewis. They can always spend it in Waitrose.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/06/2021 06:31

No to John Lewis, classic example of how out of touch Mumsnet is with normal people. No to Next or Dunelm either. It's a pain having to find something worth spending money on in a specific shop.

Can you do a gift cheque type transfer via PayPal or similar, then they can spend the money how they want without being tied to a shop they might not use.

NewPapaGuinea · 03/06/2021 07:09

John Lewis: Never knowingly undersold - they price match!

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 03/06/2021 07:14

OP just ask them. I was amazed recently that one of my young team members asked for John Lewis vouchers when we were getting him a thank you gift for something. I assumed he was far too young to shop there!
