Why is having a cabin in the woods not a thing in the U.K.?

So often on movies set in the US, people head up to the cabin for a few days. And someone I follow on Instagram has recently bought an A-frame cabin 'upstate'.

I'm very envious, I'd love to just have a cheap property in the middle of nowhere that I could take the kids to at the weekend. I've googled various version of 'cabin in woods U.K.' 'cabin in forest for sale' and it seems to me that the British version is buying a static caravan on a caravan site. I don't really like other people so this isn't really what I what. Surely it could be more of a thing here, there must be some sort of market for it? Or is there just not enough forest for it to happen here?

On a day like today (hot), I feel the attraction is to water. We don't have so many lakes to cool down in, so crave the sea.

Too damp for a wooden cabin here, but I know people who have tiny mountain/ fell cottages in Wales or Northumberland, really isolated and basic, so not “desirable” like a seaside second home. That’s achievable for a lot of people?

People own bothies...same thing but made of stone. Lots of them in Lake District and Scotland.

I’ve been wanting some land for a couple of years but the planning laws make it almost impossible
We’ve made do with a big static on a very quiet site
Only 25 vans and presently only 5 occupied right now
Ours overlooks a meadow
The birdsong is amazing. Wish I knew individual birds.
One I can name is the pheasant on the field next door

And while I’ve been typing the chickens have just turned up
First time I’ve seen them this year

I’ve been very lucky that I’ve owned a holiday home since the age of 27 bar just one year
The smallest was a 2 berth caravan that was surprisingly well equipped and the grandest was a 4 bed villa in Florida with pool

All lovely and I’m very grateful and certainly not rich, just been lucky

It’s a thing in Finland l, too, lots of families have a home next to woods and a lake. If you look at a map of Finland, there are thousands of lakes!

Massive family living in a tenement, who would from time to time decamp en masse to the But 'n Ben somewhere in the Highlands.

The equivalent for Londoners was 'going 'opping'. Four weeks in September, sleeping in a tent or barn or hut. And you got paid for it!

Same in Norway BUT in Norway they really are what I (and they!) would call a “cabin”. A fancy shed really and quite cramped. Size of a caravan. I believe in Norway they are somewhat subsided by the government so that everyone can have a small one. What I’m led to believe.

Def not like the fancy huge ones you see in the films in the US where generally someone gets murdered.

I was exploring Rightmove the other day

Older style wooden, 2 bed Lodge beside a loch in Scotland was £149k

It included the land that it was on

M1ddle0fThePlanet · 03/06/2021 08:58

Even beach huts cost loads & you are not allowed to sleep in them !

NotMeNoNo · 03/06/2021 09:00

We go to a log cabin village in Wales, not quite in woods but the mountain views are stunning and all the cabins are privately owned and a bit individual rather than Center Parc's style. It's so tempting to buy one.

We also had a fantastic holiday in a mountain cabin resort in Colorado. I love a cabin.

65k for a beach hut !

That’s such a bargain compared to southwold! Felixstowe is really underrated. Old Felixstowe is lovely and so is Landguard at the other end.

Thank you for all the replies. As I said earlier I was hoping for a reply pointing me in the direction of a cabin buying website, but actually it's given me a lot of food for thought re land distribution in the U.K. and cultural differences between us and the US.

Looks like heading up to my secluded cabin in the woods for the weekend will have to be a pipe dream for me.

What about this? No woods but it includes a cabin by the sea? And it’s really cheap and secluded!
