Best earrings for sore piercings

bendmeoverbackwards · 01/06/2021 20:22

Dd had her second pair of ear piercings 6 months ago. They healed well initially but have been very sore recently.

What sort of hypoallergenic earrings should she wear now? Titanium, niobium or stainless steel?

I'd go for titanium, surgical steel or high carat gold

Tittyfilarious · 01/06/2021 20:35

@bendmeoverbackwards my daughters ears get a little sore from time to time so I also use caflon solution on her ears aswell as good quality earrings.

High carat gold or surgical steel/ titanium.

No butterfly backs - hoops only.

Move frequently and soak in tcp twice a day

I'd also look at gauge (how thick the bit goes through the hole is) and perhaps think about going down a notch or two

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/06/2021 10:11

Thank you, I’ve for got some small gold hoops so will go with those.

If they're sore than avoid anything other than Titanium or 14k/24k gold.

Ignore all of this!!! Hoops can make healing of new piercings more difficult as the hoop can move causing irritation. Try not to move them, let along frequently! And never ever use TCP on a delicate wound! Wtf!

I'd go for titanium with the screw backs rather than butterflies as they don't get too tight. You can get them from proper piercing places (Usually found in tattooists' shops). Bathe with salt water twice a day.

I just ordered a few pairs from solace jewellery which my DD loves - they have cute ones like you might get from Claire’s only surgical steel so no irritation. The reactivity ladder when I looked it up is neobium, titanium, surgical steel, high carat gold, then silver/low carat gold etc

We went for titanium for first 6 months and now it’s over 6 months she can have steel, but I’ve asked her to avoid cheap ones completely.

Clean regularly with antibacterial ‘easy piercing spray’.

pinkyredrose · 02/06/2021 10:44

Why are they sore, does she fiddle with them? What earrings was she wearing up to now? Were they needle pierced?

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/06/2021 10:46

Yes needle pierced from a reputable piercer. Had this problem with the first piercings too 🙄

Where’s the best place for reasonably priced titanium?

I would go back to the piercer. They should be able to help with jewellery and aftercare.

newmumfeb21 · 02/06/2021 10:51

In my experience surgical steel / titanium studs with a small gauge, and lots of saline solution!

Seeline · 02/06/2021 11:52

BTW - I get a horrible reaction if I wear earrings marketed as hypoallergenic. I've found gold to be fine. Sterling silver I can only wear for short periods.

bendmeoverbackwards · 06/06/2021 18:10

I've put some titanium studs in that we have at home but the post isn't long enough so the butterfly is tight on her ear.

I'm bloody fed up with faffing around with sore ears. She has a low pain threshold, is ASD and can't manage it herself. Earrings and butterflies are tiny and fiddly.

bendmeoverbackwards · 06/06/2021 18:15

I've suggested that she takes them out and let the holes close up. That's gone down like a lead balloon.

I've found these that come in a longer post length -

Both my DDs have had metal sensitivity issues. We use labret/screw on earrings sourced from our piercers and always titanium. Solace jewellery sells some good ones too. We never use gold, cannot guarantee not to be an alloy. Clean with salt water as needed but not too frequently and dry well. Try not to fiddle... Difficult for children!

bendmeoverbackwards · 06/06/2021 19:24

Thank you @ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower I've tried screw on ones in the past and just find them too fiddly to put in dd's ears. I've just had it with fiddling around with tiny little balls while dd fusses and thrashes around
