Anyone else got a toddler who is always hot?

18 month old DS seems to run really warm (maybe like his dad who rarely feels the cold and is always too hot as soon as the sun comes out!)

He gets low grade fever when he’s teething (never higher than 38.1 or .2) which can last on and off for weeks, mainly in the afternoons randomly, and at the moment has premolars and molars coming in so we’ve had that on and off for a while.

Today for example with it being so warm, he was stripped down to a nappy for most of the afternoon and splashing about in cold water and didn’t seem to get cold at all. He’s also very fair so he gets bright red at the first sign of any kind of heat! I’ve always got people asking me if he’s too warm or has a fever :-/ which isn’t ideal in these pandemic times.

Just wondered if anyone else has DC who are the same and whether they grew out of it? His usual temp seems to be around 37.5 so he’s definitely warmer than I am!

Forgot to add I’ve spoken to the doctor as I was a bit concerned about the consistent low grade fever but he’s had a course of antibiotics previously for an infection and the doctor isn’t worried at all as he’s perfectly fine other than being warm!

My son was like that as a toddler. He's now 28 and fine .

He was rosy cheeked with blond curly hair and he got a terribly hot head in summer. His scalp used to sweat a lot and he got spots on his head that turned into blisters that would then burst and scab over. It was awful and the GP didn't know what it was.
He generally was very,very hot.
He grew out of it by the time he started school.
Now as an adult, he doesn't get hot and is pale.

My DS was born in the summer 2018 heatwave and has been hot ever since. I was dressing him in vest + babygrow and the HV told me he only needed a nappy! Blush

He still at 3 kicks the duvet off most nights, is v sweaty in this weather but in contrast to your son pretty sure he's only had a temp once or twice in his life (chicken pox and a gross stomach bug). He does go red v easily too and is fair. Thankfully he adores hats so keeping a sunhat on isn't a problem.

@DeedledeDee that’s exactly what DS is like fair blonde and curly.
The cheeks just seem to go bright red as soon as he’s a little bit warm but he just seems to be constantly warm. Never particularly sweaty though, his forehead just feels hot when I put my lips to it. The tops of his arms get red as well randomly.

He’s always fine though (apart from when he was actually poorly then he was clearly unwell and delirious with it so there’s a very clear difference) eats, sleeps, drinks, perfectly happy so despite the thermometer readings I’ve realised he’s just a hot kid!
It’s stressful though (for me not him!) so I was hoping he grows out of it

@cazinge I wish DS would keep a sun hat on for longer than three seconds!

DS was and still is at 12

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 21:00

@Hoppinggreen oh! Maybe he won’t grow out of it then. Do you find your DS has a higher average temperature than the norm?
I find it so hard when we get warm days as he gets so warm so easily

Yes, I often use my 5yo DD as a hot water bottle. She is always toasty warm and would happily wear shorts and a T-shirt all year round (and we live in Scotland!)

I’m not sure about his actual temperature as we dont have a thermometer but he’s always warm to the touch and has to be persuaded into appropriate clothing.
When he was younger he spent a lot of time naked and won’t wear anything in bed even in winter.
He’s incredibly healthy though and sails through any illness. I remember a GP saying “well I’m pretty sure he has Scarlett Fever Mrs Hopping but he should actually be ILL!!”

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 21:14

@YesPleaseMary that’s exactly what he’s like so any slight increase in temp makes him really warm as he’s already so warm to begin with!

My ds was and is like this
Sometimes his hair is wringing wet when I check on him before I go to bed - just hot and sweaty
March - Nov he'll walk around topless at home , he is a human hot water bottle

mrsdavegrohl · 01/06/2021 21:23

My youngest was like this. She's also very fair. She would be soaked in sweat during the night and still only has a 4.5tog quilt even in winter. Age 10 now shes largely grown out of the overheating and sweating.

ZoeMaye · 01/06/2021 21:25

Yes my 3 DC have all run hot and got high fevers. I run quite cold and don't get High fevers, and as they are getting older they are becoming More like me.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 21:34

It’s strange isn’t it! He doesn’t get particularly sweaty it’s mainly a boiling head and bright red rosy cheeks always so so noticeable because he’s so fair

He’s currently asleep in just a nappy while I’m in pj bottoms, a vest and a top and feel just comfortable not too hot possibly on the cooler side!

Today we were out for about half an hour and he was in the pram with the hood up - and he was still bright red and toasty! I guess I’m going to have to get used to it and not judge what to put him in based on how warm/cold I am!

The only thing that concerns me is he starts nursery at the end of the year and they are doing temp checks because of Covid. I’m pretty sure he’s regularly as warm as the Covid temp cut off :-/ so not sure how that’s going to go

My DD was/ is like this- not sweaty really but seems to have a baseline temp of 37.5 and is very fair so looks flushed easily. I do worry a lot about her health (for other reasons) but her little brother seems to be the same temp wise! I would say she’s outgrowing it now she’s out of toddlerhood but it’s so interesting to read of other children who are similar.

hangsangwitch · 01/06/2021 21:56

My giant 17 year old was like this. Always a hot child. He was born in a heatwave and is always boiling! He has a 3 tog duvet in the middle of winter and wears a thin anorak. I’ve never bought him a thick winter coat as he always refused to wear them.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 22:20

Interesting! He’s a big boy as well I wonder if there’s a correlation.

@thebearandthemare I hope you don’t mind me asking why you worry about her health? Because she runs hot? Does she have other conditions? I have to admit I have wondered if the hot/high baseline is related to anything underlying but the doctors really couldn’t be less interested because he seems perfectly well!

OP posts:
Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 22:22

Weirdly, he’s a winter baby so I’m not sure what his excuse is 🤣 but maybe that’s why he doesn’t get on with the heat!

My ds has always been a hot bod... he literally never feels the cold... he's a big lad too! Not overweight, just broad and always been fall for his age

Mumof1andacat · 01/06/2021 22:24

Yes my son 8 has always been hot. Can sweat in an instant! Nothing wrong with him. It's just him. His dad is very similar. My age is making me more like this now!

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 22:30

@itsnotnormalisit DS is very broad as well and a chubby boy, big eater, very healthy as far as I can see though! Sometimes he just gets the boiling head and the rest of him feels cool to touch but he’s not cold IYSWIM that’s usually with teething I think, the rest of the time he just seems permanently warm! I find it so hard to get my head around as I’m always cold!

Well after today I'm a bit worried as to what I'm going to do with him if we get a mega heatwave! Outside for about half an hour and bright red cheeks by the time we got in!
I had all these ideas of days out etc in summer but I;m not sure how fun that's going to be with me trying to keep him out of the sun so he doesn't get too hot. Honestly, he's like a little furnace.
Up to bed tonight in just a nappy because it's still 26 here. Fortunately it really doesn't seem to bother him but seeing him so red really bothers me! I'm really hoping he grows out of it

It’s for other reasons really, although the temperature worries me alongside it all in a ‘is this normal?!’ kind of way. She has allergies, so possibly not related. When I’ve mentioned it to her paediatrician he didn’t seem concerned.
