How to keep cool

Anyone else work from home in a sauna?

I just bought a 9000BTU air con and have sealed it entirely to the door frame. It takes the temperature down from 33 degrees to 27 degrees. It's not quite the ice cave I was hoping for. The room is 16m squared with a little side corridor so maybe 18m squared. It is south facing, new build, floor to ceiling glass in the room which are covered with metal blinds.

I've taken to placing a wet towel round my neck. Tomorrow I think I might get in a cold bath mid afternoon. I don't want to complain but am I missing anything else I could try?

Assume the blinds are down all day when the sun is on them?

Try a stick on blackout blind for the window also. Or some car dashboard ones taped on under the blind.

You need to stop the sun coming in so the Aircon can do it's thing

NorthernDramaLlama · 01/06/2021 16:54

Buy a chillow. A chilled pillow! THEY ARE FAB

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 16:56

My sympathies

I live in similar and realised the metal blinds radiate heat.

Get rid of them if you can, I just have a folding screen now.

You're lucky to have air con with a sealed window, not possible here.

That's a good reduction in temp but it m

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 16:59

Oops
Might be as good as it gets in terms of of physically cooling the room.

All the advice I got said don't buy north facing. How I wish I had.

Howzaboutye · 01/06/2021 17:00

Also can put your feet in a bucket of water. I find ankles, wrists and neck cooling gives the max cooling to the body.
And a fan on too.

A damp tea towel on your lap.

Basically you need to be slightly damp with a breeze on you then you will feel cooler!

UhtredRagnarson · 01/06/2021 17:03

Get rid of the metal blinds for starters!! They will be keeping you very warm! Buy some thermal blackout fabric and make a giant curtain to cover the windows.

You can buy cool mats for pets to lie on but they’re also good for people to sit on and put their feet on.

Drink plenty of chilled water.

Is there a north facing room you could work from?

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 17:27

Also, go and check which bits of lass get the hottest

It isn't always obvious

I just put some cardboard over a patch that I hadn't yet identified as a problem spot.

OP let us know if you find anything

For the 30 times, I was going to stick some blackout fabric up because I couldn't find anything better that wasn't crazy expensive.

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 17:35

30 degree times I mean!

Yes they are the metal ones that came with the flat. I'm on 3rd floor so the sun would come over the top of a folding screen I think. It needs to be something that deflects heat on the outside facing part. All good food for thought, thanks.

I know! It seems the summers have got hotter, or at least I am at home more now to notice.

Cool mats - sounds good, will look at this. Wrist coolers also sound a good idea.

I ordered a black out blind from Blinds 2 Go for my bedroom in May, knowing this was coming up. It took ages to make sure I got the made to measure aspect correct as they are not conventional. Then they emailed with production delays and I am not getting them until 7th July 😂😂 I am invested now as I am not deciphering anyone elses instructions 😂.

The whole flat is South facing. Its actually even slightly South West which is worse as it properly heats up from 2pm and then reaches peak scorchio about 5pm.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/06/2021 17:47

Its 31.4, so cooling down for the day 😂

OP posts:
Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 18:25

OP slunds similar

Metal blinds here too, came with!

Yes, the sun peeks over the screen but as a temporary solution, paper over the top and a screen along the main window is okay. I'm still building on it!

Mine is peak scorchio a bit later, before working at home it wasn't an issue.

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 18:26

I think buildings like this should come with external awnings!

Howzaboutye · 01/06/2021 19:57

White is your most reflective. You could blu tack A4 paper all over the window from the inside.

Or the car windscreen reflectors on the outside too.

Ostara212 · 02/06/2021 10:12

Paper is like blowing on a volcano in these flats.
OP pleeeease tell us if you find a solution.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/06/2021 10:15

hot showers will cool you down more than cold ones.
take as hot a shower as you can bear, as many times as you need (I don't mean long ones, just a quick rinse off, 1 or 2 mins max)
