Cold sore on my DD8?

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 09:57

Morning, I’m going to try and attach a picture of my daughters mouth. I’m guessing it’s a cold sore but I’ve no experience with them at all to know. It started as a normal looking spot or maybe even a scratch on Sunday morning. We’ve been applying sudocream since and this morning looks like this. I’d looked a lot yesterday online and comparing and I was fairly confident it was a spot but now with its look I’m not so sure.

It has yet to weep but has bled overnight when she knocked it (probably messing with it!). She says she didn’t notice any tingling previously.
Any ideas?

Looks like a cold sore to me. Use 'Blistex' or similar cold sore cream, and tell her not to touch it, as they can spread.

TH22 · 01/06/2021 10:06

It definitely looks like a coldsore (I am a life long sufferer). Stop with the sudocream and don't put Vaseline or anything on - these don't make it heal and can increase the spread.
Get some proper antiviral from the chemist - the patches can provide a little relief. Wash hands religiously; make sure she doesn't touch it! Wash cups and cutlery etc.
I use a liquorice balm from skin shop which has drastically reduce my outbreaks.

I found the Compeed cold sore plasters really good. Don't bother with the own brand ones. DH got Morrisons cheaper but useless. And agree no sudocrem of vaseline and no fiddling with it.

Mine don't always tingle and sometimes start as a spot, it does look like a cold sore, she will need some cold sore patches as PP says or Zovirax as long as they are ok for children's use. They usually last a week to 10 days bur the antivirals can shorten that time

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 10:20

As I feared, thank you though. My husband is popping into town with the same picture and will go into the chemists.
I’ve just no idea where she could’ve got it. No family history, not been around anyone that’s obviously had one that would be close to her. Nor has anyone at school she says.

I’m gutted to think she’s picked up a cold sore and that she will be bothered throughout her life.

Do you have the name of the liquorice balm please?

You could have passed it onto her from kissing OP. Just because you don’t get cold sores it doesn’t mean you don’t have the virus that causes them.

Landlubber2019 · 01/06/2021 10:22

I use a cold sore machine from Boot's about £35 coupled with zovirax, it cuts down the infection from 14+ days to 3-4 days. I don't get the tingling infection until after the infection takes hold!

RedRiverShore · 01/06/2021 10:23

I think some people must be just susceptible to catching them, my DF and myself had them but DM and DB didn't. My DH and DS have never had them.

Wbeezer · 01/06/2021 10:23

Probably a cold sore but also impetigo a possibility so keep an eye on it spreading.

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 10:23

Thanks for the help, hopefully the pharmacist will be able to help with child friendly patches. She’s such a picker, I’m sure we will all end up them!

I’ll change her pillow case everyday think that’ll help?

OP posts:
Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 10:25

Impetigo? How would I know please?
I was presuming this isn’t a thing to go to docs for, to be swabbed or anything but maybe it is? As I say, no experience at all with them or anyone I know off to ask.

Something like 95% adults have cold sore virus, but only a tiny proportion bothered by cold sores. It’s just how your body handles them and reactivates viruses. She may never have another episode or only when she’s very run down.

Daily lysine tablets have completely stopped mine and I used to get them twice a month. I had it recommended it on here about a decade ago. The tables are massive though so I would not think a child of 8 could swallow them - before that I used the balm and it worked too just a faff to keep reapplying.

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 10:49

No tingling at all, she says.

Anyone know if she can go swimming with it? She has school lessons.

I’ve changed her bedding, got her some of her own towels so good to go!

OP posts:
Teessider · 01/06/2021 10:55

That's impetigo I think

Arachnid · 01/06/2021 11:04

Looks like impetigo - my child had it a couple of months ago on the corner of their mouth - had it swabbed as I thought it was a cold sore and no - impetigo. Used cystederm? (Sp?) to clear it. No swimming, it’s very catching.

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 11:07

Thanks for the link TH22.

OP posts:
RedRiverShore · 01/06/2021 11:08

I would probably take her to GP to determine whether cold sore or impetigo as they need completely different treatment as one is viral and the other bacterial.

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 11:23

Now I’ve looked on the NHS website for Impetigo it does look cornflake crusty!
I’ve just rung the doctors reception. They asked if I could take her to a pharmacist first, So I said my husband is going to ask for an opinion today, and off the back of that they’ll book us a doc appt.

TedHastingsweeDonkey · 01/06/2021 11:33

It does look like impetigo to me, and would explain the spot like appearance at first and the lack of tingling. Please don't take her swimming or anywhere for that matter as it is highly contagious (same applies for cold sores as well). Definitely change the bedding daily and use separate, fresh towels for face / other body parts to reduce spreading and don't let her share utensils / cups with anyone. Good luck OP, hope it clears up in no time with little no bother for her! Thanks

sproutsandparsnips · 01/06/2021 11:41

Looks like impetigo I agree. There is a golden crust on it. Flucloxacillin or might get away with fucidin cream.

Hopefulfor3rd · 01/06/2021 12:15

You’re correct! Pharmacist says it’s so, husband there now and waiting for some meds of some sort.

Thanks everyone.
Last thing, we have play dates and a hack out planned with others at the local riding school. I’m guessing I need to cancel all? At what point isn’t she contagious?

OP posts:
Teessider · 01/06/2021 14:00

It's contagious but it clears up very quickly and it's very common in kids so I personally wouldn't be too concerned about cancelling literally everything. Depends on the activity
