Ogmore-by-Sea - Anybody know the area?

We're holiday planning and want a base in Wales for coastal walks, surfing and day trips to Brecon Beacons. DH has booked accommodation at Ogmore-by-Sea on the Welsh coast. Anyone know it? Are there good surf beaches nearby that can be accessed without sitting in traffic jams?

When I was at uni (poly!) people used to go surfing at Southerndown and Ogmore. That is my entire knowledge of surf beaches in the area!

Gosh that his brings back memories! I went to ogmore every February half term for 15 years. When I was about 12 they built an ice cream shack, that was a memorable year.
Surf is always fab but certainly don’t remember any other areas of interest sorry!

Rest Bay is a short way along the coast in Porthcawl, there’s a surf school there! The coast all along that area is lovely, great walks along the Wales coastal path.

Yes, you could try surfing there or down Southerndown. Porthcawl would be your best surfing spot. Bit of a trek to go from there to Brecon though, tbh, I'd personally make it two separate trips as the Brecon area is also lovely and there are fab places to stay in there too.

Ogmore by Sea is very popular with surfers. There is nothing else of interest though. Are you staying in OBS?

Brecon is only just over an hour away, and you are not far Cardiff either.

On a good day, not with the usual M4 traffic which you wouldn't want to get stuck in regularly on your holiday.

Ogmore by Sea is lovely, a gorgeous beaver and brilliant for surfing, however there is nothing there other than houses and the beach. That said you're on a fabulous bit of Welsh coastline with Rest Bay (excellent surfing) 10 minutes away by car with rarely much traffic, Porthcawl with its Sandy beach and funfair 10 minutes, Southerndown amazing cliffs and rock formations. In addition you have Barry Island go Gavin & Stacey fame about 20 minutes by car plus loads of great walks etc.
You have one of the largest sand dune complexes in the Uk at Merthyr Mawr, a few minutes from OBS, with miles of sand dunes to explore. You can even hire toboggans to go down the biggest ones.
Ogmore by Sea falls in Bridgend County and Bryngarw House with its gorgeous gardens and river walks makes a good day out. Dyffryn Gardens is a NT property fairly close again makes for a great Grady out.
If it's wet you can visit the cinema in Bridgend ( if reopened), a designer outlet for shopping or the swimming pool in Bridgend or Trecco Bay Porthcawl.
If you want a day out further afield Swansea is 30 minutes up the M4 with the Mumbles and Gower Peninsula which is well worth a visit.
You might guess that I'm fairly local to the area and give you loads more ideas.
