Stabbing pain in back, what could it be ?

I have had this very occasionally for years, may be unrelated but some years ago I had a bad fall where i landed on sharp tiled steps, pain is in the same place which is why I wonder.
I will be completely fine and then it is as though someone has stuck something sharp into me. A very sharp, brief spike that makes me squeal, then gone. I have had it happen a few times over a day, then nothing for many months.
However yesterday and today it has started happening much more frequently, I will be sitting on the sofa, or walking about, then this horrible sudden jab. I am scared to move ! What on earth can it be ? I tested my urine as I had a nasty kidney infection a few years back and now keep test strips just in case. That was clear. The pain is roughly on my waist, central but slightly to one side .
My GP is hopeless hence me asking if anyone else has experienced this.

Is it the sudden pain near you backside? Sciatic nerve maybe? SI joint is another possibility. I'm going through physio for the last 4 months for lower back pain, it's a killer of a thing some days

Can be a vertebra moving out of line - try a physio

pringleslover · 31/05/2021 14:51

Sorry posted too soon - could also be tight intercostal muscles

It does sound like it could be a weakness caused by your previous injury. Worth looking into physio. My GP says you can self refer.

Sharp - maybe a disc? Does it feel like someone has stuck a sharp knife in your back? Ive popped/torn a few disks and also get pains as if I am giving a piggy back ride to a hippo.

Does it get worse if you lie or sit down? Or if you move or bend?

I use an osteopath now - and I’ve tried allsorts to fix my back but this is the only thing that gives relief.

It feels as though something very sharp but small has been spiked into me, like it would feel if someone jabbed you with a pin. Intense but brief pain. It is almost at waist level.

I thought it was worse when sitting but I bent over to wash my hair over the bath earlier and that seemed to trigger it, then it just happens randomly while sitting or walking about.

It is where my trouser waistband sits at the back.

Literally makes me jump and scream , like being stung, so I dare not go out !

One of my friends mentioned kidney stones, does that sound possible ?

It sounds like a trapped nerve. Could also be SI joint dysfunction. Needs checking out anyway, even if it's intermittent

SirVixofVixHall · 31/05/2021 18:06

So should I go to the hopeless GP or straight to an osteopath?
V grateful for all the advice btw, thank you.

I would go to an osteopath - GPs have never been brilliant at diagnosing my aches (have some painkillers that would knock out a bull elephant) and the physio I went to just have me exercises. The osteo I went to correctly diagnosed my underlying back issue (I’d had an X-ray before so knew what the problem was) just by looking at me and asking me to bend over.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/05/2021 18:57

If you can, I would see an Osteopath as the GP is likely to just refer you to Physio

I did used to see a chiropractor fairly regularly as I have a dodgy neck, but because of Covid I haven’t seen him for a long time. I will try and get an appointment with an osteopath.

I used to see a chiropractor, but found it agony and took a while to get better. The osteopath was a fantastic find! My sister sees a chiropractor (sciatica) and she swears by him.

MrsDThomas · 31/05/2021 21:40

My stabbing pain was SI joint.

See a physio at your GP for diagnosis
