Air conditioning units

Hi all. I need to cool my conservatory down considerably - it was 47 degrees in there earlier! Looking at portable air con units, but are they any good in that type of heat? Would prefer portable as can drag it to other parts of the house when needed, but I’m not sure if they have a maximum operating temperature? Does anyone have any experience of them? Thanks!

I bought a Delonghi PACAN98 ECO REAL FEEL last year for £600, it's the best thing I've ever bought! We live in a 3rd floor, south facing modern flat & summers are brutally hot, this has made such a difference to my quality of life. I'd thought of buying something for years, wish I'd done it much sooner. Got it from PRC Direct, I'd never heard of them but reviews were good & I agree. Similar models are available elsewhere, amazon etc. It's not as quiet as they say but I honestly could not care less.

Thanks, I’ll have a look at that one.

It will struggle to bring down that temperature. Main factor will be how big the room is. I have portable air con in my bedroom. When we have heatwaves, 30+ it will bring it down to about 22. But theoretically mines supposed to be able to go down to 17, but only manages that if it’s around 23/24 to begin with. So there are limits.

That being said I wouldn’t be without mine. I find it too hot to sleep once the temperature goes above 22/23 so I use it a lot in summer. If you have a small conservatory I’d say yes, get one. If it’s quite large you would really need proper installed air con.

Thanks. It’s only 4x3m so not huge. I can get the temperature down considerably if I open the doors for a bit, but would like something to bring it down a bit more so I don’t always have to sit with the doors open.

It won't bring down the temp significantly if the room is already that hot. You'd need to put it on early in the day before the heat builds up.

They're expensive to run. We've got a mix of in-window air cond and proper air conditioners and they are much cheaper than the stand alone ones my daughter uses in her flat. She only has the stand alones because it's impractical to fit a proper air con on the upper level.

You'd need one around 14000-15000 btu to cope with your conservatory. Be warned, they're heavy, very loud and more expensive to run than a proper wall mounted one with outside unit.

CyberPixie · 31/05/2021 10:04

Forgot to say, you also need to vent them out a window/door if it's a portable one.

40somethingJBJ · 31/05/2021 10:33

I can vent it out of a window no problem. I’d love a wall mounted proper one, but I’ve not really got much in the way of walls in the conservatory, unless one could be fitted low down on a dwarf wall?

Yes there are floor mounted ones too!

Is it a polycarbonate roof or glass?

40somethingJBJ · 31/05/2021 11:00

Polycarbonate
