DD has a little danio fish. There were 3 of them but he is the last remaining one and is just over 3 years old. When the others died they just died, no apparent illness, we just got up one morning and they were dead.

This one, not so much. Three times this week I've thought he was dead only for him to move when I put the net in the tank. He hasn't eaten for about 5 days and lies motionless on his side, back etc. He's fading away. I rang the vet on Thursday and yesterday and they said to let 'nature take it's course' and 'sometimes they do that's, but it's bloody not taking it's course and I'm worried that the poor wee thing is suffering. Anyone else had this and the fish recovered?

I'm afraid I've never had much success restoring fish to life, but I have used the clove oil and vodka method to painlessly put them out of their misery.

OrchidLass · 30/05/2021 17:59

Sad oh I was really hoping someone would say the opposite. I think that's my only option just now, the vets aren't interested because it's 'only' a fish I think. He's a sweet wee thing.

It could be any range of huge chemical issues with your tank, or just old age. My DP has a small fish tank and has bought SO MANY chemicals and treatments for his water, and even had a blinking “fish hospital” set up currently to treat the tetras for something or other.

You could take a sample to an aquatics shop and they can water test for you to tell you if it’s your

Sometimes peas help. Defrost a couple of frozen ones and squeeze them out of the outer shell and pop it in the tank for them to eat.

Screenshots of pea info here...

Sorry, I should have said, I tried peas yesterday but no interest. Sad

I would go down the clove oil route too, I had to do this last week with one of my little platies, he was doing exactly as you described and I felt so sorry for him. 3 years is great for a little danio so well done, I hope he’s at peace soon x

Sounds like it could be swim bladder if it isn’t moving a lot and not interested in eating

You can buy treatments but it’s not always successful and they usually suggest euthanising the fish if treatment doesn’t improve over 3 days

OrchidLass · 30/05/2021 19:14

I feel horrible. I really don't want to euthanise him myself but I think I'll have to I really don't want him to suffer anymore but I feel like a bloody murderer.

A pet shop I did work experience in, used for catch dying fish in a net, and whacked them hard against a wall. Instant death.

Wigeon · 30/05/2021 20:19

We have danios and minnows and the danios are fine, but periodically a minnow dies a long slow death, usually over about 2 or 3 weeks, steadily getting worse. I can quite bring myself to kill them as I always think that maybe it will rouse. They never do…

OrchidLass · 31/05/2021 09:26

Well it's been taken out of my hands now because when I checked before I went to bed he was def dead. He's in the garden now with his little fishy mates.
