What would your sleep timings be if....

You didnt have work, kids etc. So if your body could settle its sleep rhythm naturally.

I would be asleep by 10.30pm and up by 9.30am. The minimum sleep ideal for me is 9 hours solidly, but preferable is 11 hours.

DH on the other hand would be asleep by midnight and up at 6am, his natural body clock is better on minimal sleep. Too much sleep and he struggles the next day with tiredness which seems counter intuitive.

during the holidays I find my natural sleep if 12pm to 10am

Itstheprinciple · 29/05/2021 22:24

I need about 9 hours in an ideal world. I work in a school so in the holidays I generally end up sleeping 11 until 8. In term time, my alarm is set for 6 so even if i go to bed at 10, I'm still an hour sleep deficient each day but I can't bring myself to go to work any earlier, I feel like I'd never have any time with DH by the time he has finished work.

Hezz · 29/05/2021 22:26

I'm self employed and go to bed and wake when I like. I'm usually asleep by 11 and awake by 8.

Midnight-10ish.

Midnight-8:30/9. I work shifts though so not possible unless I’m on leave.

LindaEllen · 29/05/2021 22:34

@meow1989

My natural routine is not to sleep until about 3am then sleep until the early afternoon. Worked when I did shifts and didn't have ds. Now it does not! I sleep like a teenager and can always nap. However I usually now go to bed between 11 and 12 and am up with ds at 6.45 most days.
Exactly this for me. It fits with my work schedule perfectly. People call me lazy for sleeping in, even though I get exactly the same amount (if not less) of sleep as they do.
MargaretThursday · 29/05/2021 22:34

I'd go to bed around 1am, and lie in bed reading until around 3am. Wake around 9am.
I'd then have a nap around 5pm for 2-3 hours.

mawbroon · 29/05/2021 22:35

3am til midday

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/05/2021 22:38

2am-11am, up later a few times a week.

addictedtotheflats · 29/05/2021 22:38

11 - 9. Then an after noon nap if I wasnt busy. Oh god those were the days!!
I still get my nap in most days when DS (2) has his afternoon nap, when im off work obviously

clipclop5 · 29/05/2021 22:40

3am - 10am

Freecuthbert · 29/05/2021 22:41

God, when I was off work for months and had no kids my sleep pattern was a mess. Sometimes I would be nocturnal, other times up at the crack of dawn. I did find though that I could easily sleep 12 hours solidly... I just love my sleep.

BadMotherLover · 29/05/2021 22:41

This is very interesting. For me it is 5 hours or 10 hours, anything inbetweenis a disaster. So similar to your DH then OP. I have believed for a while that adults do a REM cycle (4+hrs) or 2 REM cycles (8+hrs). Anything else is a car crash.

PASStheCAKEandCHOC · 29/05/2021 22:41

Oh my. What a dream.. Bed around midnight.. Up whenever. Likely midday. I am NOT a morning person.

Ideasplease322 · 29/05/2021 22:42

11pm to 8am

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 29/05/2021 22:45

No idea. I had my first when I was still a lazy teenager, I've had college or worked and had 2 more children since then so there's always something disturbing my sleep or making me get up at a certain time. If I had to guess I would say about 8 or 9 hours because I usually get about 6 and I'm pretty tired most of the time.

Jellykat · 29/05/2021 23:02

I've always been a night owl so 3am to 10.00.
My dad was a freelance designer and chose to work at night and sleep in the day. Great if i woke up at night as a child, as i could sit in his studio and watch him draw, but awful in the daytime as he wasn't around. It may be in the genes Grin

LockdownCheeseToastie · 29/05/2021 23:03

Multiple chronic illnesses so ideally need 12 hours in bed (even if some spent reading, surfing the web) so 10pm to 10am or similar plus an hour long afternoon nap. Reality is start work at 8am and spend the time after work driving kids to activities, cooking, washing, hoovering etc so am chronically tired all the time. Part of me longs for the days when all I have to do is get myself up and to work then home again rather than rallying and transporting kids plus feeding them, helping with homework, talking about the latest friendship drama etc. I know I’ll miss them when they aren’t there however. Fatigue causing illnesses suck.

3CCC · 29/05/2021 23:27

I'd be up by 10am bed about 1:00 am

But it would depend I love the idea of being flexible that if you were watching something on Netflix not feeling guilty about watching one more episode

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 29/05/2021 23:41

I would sleep around 6-7 am and wake around 4pm if I was completely left to my own devices.

Me normal clock is 2am bed up at 11am currently bed 1am up at 7am

QueenPaw · 30/05/2021 00:00

Midnight - 9am then probably a nap 2-4pm (chronic illnesses)

ApplesinmyPocket · 30/05/2021 01:37

I like a late night, when it's all quiet and dark and everyone but me has gone to bed, so let's say I go to bed at 2am

I can't sleep in, somehow. If the light mornings wake me at 6 or 7, I struggle to get back again, but usually manage a doze till 8am

(so that's 6 hours in the night)

But then.... by 3 pm I'm very sleepy. I sleep from 4-6 pm every day. A luxury because I'm old, retired, and have grown-up children.

8 hours in total, so fairly normal I think, but spread across two 'sleeps'. Bliss.

Gingerkittykat · 30/05/2021 02:43

I have ADHD and apparently this is correlated with delayed sleep phase disorder, which is where your circadian cycle is longer than 24 hours

I also have DSPS (autistic but on waiting list for ADHD assessment).

My natural sleep pattern atm is 6am to around 2pm, which is doable in lockdown since I can work overnight.

I've spent years trying to fight my body clock and decided to go with my natural rhythm for now.
