Hot Tubs- Novelty or regular use

Never really thought about having one, but DH seems to fixated on the idea, can see its appeal as will not being going abroad etc for a while. If you have one is it used regularly (and glad you bought it) or just occasionally (and wish you never had) currently having garden done so need to make a decision before they start back Tuesday as it will need to be factored into the design. Any help greatly appreciated.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba does your chicken pop up on the sides for a look?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/06/2021 09:53

that's interesting @LemonRoses
do you think it was the chlorine? if yes, has he had the same reaction in a swimming pool before?

A friend of mine can't use pools as she's allergic to chlorine (amongost other things) and MIL has eczema so doesn't dare to try.

what brand is the enzyme based cleaner you are using, please?
glad he can use it now with a different cleaning agent

@NiceTwin

one of them did once, while I was in the tub🤣
it was so funny, just standing on top step and popping her head up like a meerkat

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba He doesn’t think it caused it in the first place (blames dye from an angiogram), but then it didn’t go away and hot tub made it flare up.

We don’t often swim in Chlorine as prefer the sea and rivers, so not sure whether a swimming pool would trigger it now.

@LemonRoses

thanks for answer.

Interesting others have had reactions too. I like the idea of a hot tub, but it is the hygiene factors / chemicals trade off that puts me off.

I also reckon I’d spend more time cleaning it than actually using it!

Will save it for holiday cottages I think (and take a stack of moisturiser for after!!)

My neighbour has one. It's noisy and annoying. I don't know whether you can get quiet ones?

Motherofmonsters · 01/06/2021 10:05

We have a hard standing one and use it every other day, we bought a monitor that checks how much 'grime: (can't remember the fancy word) per volume of water so we change when it goes over. We shower before so it lasts at least 3months before we swap. When it's really hot out we turn it down for a plunge pool. Ours is only a 3seater but perfect for us.

Enjoy your hot-tub! You will get a lot of negativity on here about them. We initially had an inflatable one (about 5 years ago) but found it expensive to run therefore upgraded to a fixed one, cheaper to run as more insulated. Have had lots of fun and relaxation in it but I think the novelty does wear off eventually.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/06/2021 10:11

@orangejuicer

you can't hear ours at all, the self-cleaning function is quieter than a washing, but it doesn't run at night so no issues.
during the day surrounding noise is much louder, can not hear the tub at all.

when we are in it obviously the jets make some noise and the kids are noisy too but it's the same level as neighbours' kids splashing in a paddling pool and enjoying it.

I have hyperacusis so was concerned about maintenance noise being a problem. it's not an issue at all

Hot tubs are marmite. You either love them so get one or can’t stand them and don’t. Friends of ours bought a house with one, it’s literally never used.

Sounds like your husband is the sort to use it regularly. For you it will be more of a novelty.

MsTSwift · 01/06/2021 10:34

For me it’s my daily routine. Exercise /shower /hot tub with coffee and book/quick shower - start day feeling great! Weirdly they are better in the winter. Christmas morning etc. Also fun for teen girl gatherings.

same here for DH, he jumps in with kids between finishing work and having dinner on weekdays. I get in whenever it's either practical timewise or I'm in the mood. at the weekend we use it more than once.

it's a big hit with teenage boys too btw!😁

I'm jumping in now. see ya later dudes!

We have a fixed one which we bought about 3 years ago - primarily for ds who has additional needs. He uses it every single day, and I don’t know how he would have coped without it over the last year.
We check the chemical levels every single time before he gets in, and adjust them if required - there shouldn’t be any issues with your skin or anything as long as you do that.
We also change the water and clean the whole thing out every 6 weeks or so.
I have arthritis and if I can be bothered getting in the hot tub, then it definitely eases it.
You’ll always get very mixed views on here though - as another poster said “Mumsnet hates hot tubs”, and I’ve seen them rather charmingly referred to as “sex ponds” although I can say categorically ours has never been used for that!

We hired one for DD's lockdown birthday last year. I'm a bit of a water baby so was really looking forward to it but it was so damn noisy that I didn't find it relaxing at all.
