Something has died in our garden.

Sat on the patio with a cup of tea and there are definitely more bluebottle flies in the garden and an awful whiff of something dead . Have had a look about but can't find anything obvious. How long before it gets less smelly if we can't find it ? It comes in waves so can't really detect where it is.

If it is an animal that has died, it is likely to be under a bush as they crawl into cover when poorly. You need to find it quickly and bag it or you will have to have all your windows shut for a week or so.

Do you have a water barrel? Once had the same smell and flies, to find a rat had negotiated a down pipe and ended up in the water barrel, smell was horrific.

We had a muntjac deer stuck in a fence and that smelled for a couple
Of weeks (in waves, much like you’re experiencing) before we found what it was ..... as others have said, you need to track it down before it gets worse

We think we've walked to the area and have a good look round but can't find it , then go to another area and smell it there. Will have to wait to see where the flies go / come from !

I had a stinkhorn fungus growing in my garden once that was surprisingly awful.
