Planning an unplanned day...

Last month has been incredibly rubbish. We are all extremely fed up too.

I want to do something over the weekend, just get in the car and go, without knowing where we'll end up, and what we'll do or eat once we are there.

How do I do this without planning at all? Does this even make sense? Grin

We did this last weekend, we got up and ready, packed a bag for the day and off we went. It turned out a really lovely day. We ended up at a park around an hours drive away and spent the full day there then got a takeaway on the way home for dinner.
I think as long as your not planning on going anywhere you need to book tickets for then you'll be fine, I'm finding a lot is booked up a couple of weeks at least in advance where we are at the moment.
Take food and drinks with you and you won't have to worry about being able to find somewhere for food. It's supposed to be a lovely weekend so enjoy!

Sounds like you had a nice day. How did you decide where you were going to go once you had got in the car? Did you just drive?

We used to do this as a child, mum'd make a lunch, we'd pack up in the car at about 9am ish, dad would drive and my brother and I would shout directions from the back of the car. Was great fun we ended up in all sorts of places l, stopped around 1pm eat and explore, then head back home (dad had a road map, this was pre satnavs)

BarbaraofSeville · 28/05/2021 20:51

I wouldn't bank on getting into a pub or cafe for a sit down meal but you'd probably be able to get fish and chips.

Maybe just see if you see a sign for a tourist site or viewpoint.

However a lot of things need booking at the moment and it's half term and decent weather for once so it might not be the best time to try and have an unplanned day.

Where are you in the country? Maybe if people suggest places and you pick one at random, there's still the element of surprise?

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese - the DC would love this. Pinching the idea, IYDM? Smile What a lovely memory for you.

@BarbaraofSeville - good points. We are in Kent.

The good old 'lefty righty'.
DC take turns to call out left or right.
You all end up where you're meant to be.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 28/05/2021 21:27

Be my guest @OnTheRoadAgainCantwait ds isn't quite 2 yet so he won't get it, but really looking forward to do it with him.

Stichintime · 28/05/2021 21:30

It could be really fun if you end up on a round about with the DC shouting directions.

Yeah we just drove until we seen somewhere we fancied, we'd never been there before so decided to give it a try.
OnTheRoadAgainCantwait · 28/05/2021 22:10

Oh, quite looking forward to this now.
Sure we won't end up anywhere overly exciting, being a bank holiday weekend, at the start of half term.
Still, one can hope Grin

Bit of a bump, as I'm liking all of your suggestions here Smile

I used to love doing this! Let us know where you end up, have fun!

OnTheRoadAgainCantwait · 29/05/2021 09:26

@MrsAudreyAlfredRobertsOBEHmm - you used to do this? As a child or an adult? Did you pack up food?

inappropriateraspberry · 29/05/2021 09:37

Not quite the same, but when I was little me and my mum would get I. The car and she'd ask me to choose which way we went at each junction etc. We'd have random drives around the lanes then go home!
You could do this on a bigger scale by driving until you find a sign for something interesting/different.

Montalbanosono · 29/05/2021 09:46

I remember doing this with my mum as a child by pointing out places on the map and just going to see what they were like. Once I took us on a tour of white horses (the chalk kind not real ones) and similar. Great fun.

Montalbanosono · 29/05/2021 09:48

I also did this a lot on my bike as a lonely teenager (actually I still doBlush ). Once I had to beg my parents to come and pick me and the bike up as I'd gone too far and was too tired to cycle back.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/05/2021 09:51

Ooh how exciting
I think you should set an alarm for 90 mins , 2 hrs whatever and stop when it goes off!
Not mid motorway or anything lol

MrsAudreyAlfredRobertsOBEHmm · 29/05/2021 10:31

As an adult @OnTheRoadAgainCantWait, both with and without children Grin
We also used to a treasure hunt with the children, that works best on country roads with old sign posts though
Happy days
