How much alcohol would you let your 17 year old take to a party?

My seventeen year old is going to his first proper house party this weekend. He’s told us he’d like to have a drink but has never had more than one bottle of cider at home with us.
I’ve bought four cans of cider for him but am now worrying that’s too much! What would you allow your seventeen year old to take?

My 16 year old is going to a House Party this weekend but isn’t taking alcohol because “she doesn’t drink” . Not sure whether to suggest she takes soft drinks instead.

She should, then she'll be sure there's something she wants to drink. Plus it's good manners to bring a contribution to the party.

If she accepts a soft drink from someone else, unless it's an unopened bottle, she can't be sure it hasn't been mixed with something.

I think that sounds good. Remind him it takes a while to kick in. And that mixing leads to very nasty hangovers!

Hope he has a great time!

As long as it's not the cider that burns a hole in your gut I think 4 cans is fine Grin

My mum sent me with a bottle of wine to my first party at 17 😂 we were all pretty sensible though and she knew I wouldn't down it all myself. They were relaxed about alcohol at home so I didn't feel the need to go off the rails when unsupervised.

The kids who tended to take it too far at parties and then uni, were always the ones with strict parents!

4 cans sounds about right. Plus he probably won't drink them all, may share with a friend.
My 17 year old at her first house party took a small bottle of vodka and a big bottle of coke, and came home with half the vodka undrunk.

I think as long as they are used to some degree of alcohol at home, most of the teens I know are pretty sensible with it. of course, there will come the time when they get off their face, we've all been there! but from experience of all my teens, that is yet to happen and hasn't happened at a house party with a load of 17 year olds.

My 15 (nearly 16) year old went to one last week. She was worried bc apparently "everyone" was taking booze. In the end I got her and her 2 friends (yes I did speak to their mums!) a bottle of Gallo Summer fruit rose. Looks like normal rose wine but low alcohol only 4.5%. Split between the 3 of them it was fine.
