WWYD - third root canal costing £££ or extraction?

Hey,

So last year during lockdown 1.0 a tooth that had previously been niggly turned in to a monster overnight causing me to have an emergency root canal. It was horrendous. I had about 9 injections of anaesthetic and still had tears rolling down my face. At the end the dentist told me I’d need a second root canal once lockdown had eased. A few months later I psyched myself up and went to get the second one done to be told the x ray showed my roots are unusually long and that having it done by a private specialist would be the best option. The NHS dentist said alternatively she would give it a go if I wanted to but wasn’t guaranteeing she would get to the bottom of the root..
I asked her to try. So another hour in the chair another root canal done and at the end she said she still wasn’t happy with it and would refer me for a third treatment with the private dentist. Apart from slight sensitivity the tooth hasn’t bothered me since until last night when I suddenly had the familiar niggly feeling back. I know that this will develop into worse pain so need to to bite the bullet (pardon the pun) and decide what to do. I rang the private dentist and with consultation fees and a crown I’m looking at between £1300 and £1400 to have the tooth done again. I have assumed that there is no guarantee that the third root canal will be successful so am wondering whether to cut my losses and just get the thing taken out. It’s my molar. I’ve already had wisdom teeth out so this is the very back tooth.
Financially we could just about stretch to it but husbands work is short term contracts at the moment and currently not guaranteed past November and my poorly paid teaching assistant job is under review due to a staff restructure. So WWYD?

In a similar situation, I opted for extraction. My thought process was that I couldn't bear to go through more surgery which even then might not work and to pay thousands for it. In the end, I just wanted the bloody thing gone. Haven't regretted it once.

Thanks for all the advice and reassurance (especially regarding sunken faces Grin)

I think I’ll go for the extraction. If I went through that all again and spent all that money and it still didn’t work I’d be fuming.

An implant is something I hadn’t thought much about... I’ll definitely look into at some point so thanks for the suggestion.

Not worth it - it'll fail again at some point in the future and need replacing again. Just get it out.

I had exactly the same scenario as you OP.
The pain was indescribable.
Got referred to a private dentist who spent an hour trying to get to the end of a long root.
No joy.
He said the best option now is to have it removed so "I can do it now or I'll book you back in to do it". I told him to just pull it. I'd had enough! I think he had to!
After 6 months I went back to him for a consultation for implants.
Cost ££££ but they did a payment plan over 12 months.
Don't regret it.
Good luck 😊

Had 4 on the one tooth. 3 at the same endodontist and they did the last 2 repeats free to ensure it worked. Seems to have.
Check if you're returning to the same endodontist that maybe they don't charge for repeat work?

I was recommended root canal, but opted for extraction. Never regretted it. Have similar situation on other side, and when the time comes, plan to do the same.

Lollypop4 · 27/05/2021 22:01

I've had 2 extractions over root canal.
No issues and no regrets.
I wouldn't have root canal at all.
You cant see my 2 extractions thankfully but I'd still choose extraction over R.C , if they were front teeth

FVFrog · 27/05/2021 22:31

Just a caution about implants, I had one fail after less than two years for no obvious reason. £2500 wasted!

Madcatwoman68 · 28/05/2021 04:34

My mum used to get abscesses. Her dentist referred her to our local hospital for an extraction. It was a specialist dental department
Could you get a hospital referral?

LuckyVal · 28/05/2021 06:43

@Madcatwoman68 funny you should say that, I also have a cyst behind the affected tooth (although apparently unrelated Confused) I’ve been referred to an NHS oral surgeon for that and I was wondering if they might do something about the tooth as well. But I’m still waiting to hear from them, it’s been about 5 weeks and I’m not sure it’ll be anytime soon, if this tooth starts flaring up before I get seen I’ll have to get it sorted.

I had a similar issue with one of my molars and has it taken out as I was so tired of being in pain and going through procedures on it that didn’t work. No regrets and I’d do the same again if time was turned back.

You can’t see it when I smile and once the initial healing was over it’s been completely fine.
