HelloFresh

Hey all

Taking inspo from a recent thread about meal prepping becoming so repetitive and boring. I’m looking into HelloFresh and would love to hear from any of you who have used it or are currently using it? Is it worth it?

We’re a family of 4 and would probably go for the veggie meals. What sort of recipes do they have in this option? The website won’t let me select my recipes until after I’ve put my card details through for some reason.

I thought I could just browse the recipes first?

Thank you

I found HF to be repetitive and often had bits missing.
I'd absolutely recommend Gousto though.

Londonista123 · 26/05/2021 21:05

I tried HF, Gousto, Simply Cook, Feast Box and a few others (thanks lockdown). I likely still have some recipe cards knocking around so I can send you a few sample photos if you like (I’m sure the companies will be delighted Grin).

I really found Gousto best of all, especially on range of flavours. I’m not vegetarian but probably choose vegetarian options two times out of four because they have a really wide, appealing range of them.

If you want a discount code here’s a 60% then 30% off for Gousto and I suspect someone will be along soon with an equivalent for the others; they usually have offers on.

KingsArmy · 26/05/2021 21:10

I've just recently cancelled after being with them for 6 weeks. The first week was great however every week after that there was something missing, including the main item such as chicken - that happened 2 weeks running through to small things like the limes missing or the onions. I had burger buns with mould on one week, chicken that stank to high heaven another week and although they gave me a refund it was a headache having to email them again and again to complain.
I think the idea is really good but I could not rely on them to deliver unfortunately.

I prefer Gousto but I do switch to HF when they offer me a discount to come back.

sunnysidegold · 26/05/2021 21:11

Hello fresh was ok for us but being in NI Brexit seemed to mean a lot of supply issues meaning we never got what we ordered. I canceled it after having it all refunded as I was so annoyed. They did a lovely oven baked tomato risotto which was lovely.

Maybe I'll give gousto a whirl next.

EssentialHummus · 26/05/2021 21:19

Another one here who prefers Gousto to Hello Fresh - just more variety on offer.

imindecisive · 26/05/2021 21:21

I've been using Hello Fresh as it's the only way I've managed to get back into cooking after having a baby! Just not having the mental load of meal planning. I try and do a mix of veggie and meat because it means they stretch longer across the week, as with all meat it meant I generally had to cook all the meals within 4 days of getting the box which didn't always work out.

I've got a code at the moment for £20 off your first box

Another vote for Gousto and a shameless link for you to get 60% off your first box and then 30% off the rest of the month worth. In full disclosure, I get £15 credit towards my next box if you use it! 😁

Also here’s a link to the recipes - pre baby if just get inspiration from here and not bother with the subscription!

I tried Hellofresh when someone gave me a voucher. We all enjoyed the meals but without the voucher I would find it poor value for money. I found the instructions a bit weird.

The most off-putting thing was the amount of packaging that couldn't be recycled. It was obscene.

GintyMcGinty · 26/05/2021 21:27

HF is much better for veggie than gusto. We get HF 1-2 times a month. And it's veggie for us.

Yes you can browse. There is no commitment. You can skip as many weeks as you like or stop entirely b

Roominmyhouse · 26/05/2021 21:29

I went to do hello fresh but found their recipes choices a bit crap to be honest. But I’ve used Gousto loads (well when I can get a discount) and it’s great. Had chicken black pepper Dahl tonight which was lush. They’ve really upped the veggie options recently too.

Missmollypolly · 26/05/2021 21:30

We use hello fresh - often the meat has very short use by dates (this week we have 6 meals and it’s physically impossible to eat them all before some of the meat is out of date ) and frequently items are missing. It works well for us most of the time - but the little glitches can be really annoying

homedreamer1 · 26/05/2021 21:30

We really enjoyed hf and used it for about 2 years but then found got a bit repetitive. Using gusto now and so far it slightly has the edge. Would recommend though as little waste, tasty food and takes the hassle of meal prep.

MojoJojo71 · 26/05/2021 21:33

I used to go back and forth between hello fresh and Gousto but had so many issues with hello fresh and they are also more expensive so get gousto every week now.

I see someone has beaten me to it but here’s my referral link if anyone else fancies 60% off to give it a try. The box I get is 4 meals for 2 for £34.99, with the code it would only be £14, bargain!

LaCerbiatta · 26/05/2021 21:40

Found hello fresh poor value and the meat really poor quality. Funnily enough never had anything missing though!
Also, found the meals a bit samey (a LOT of wraps!) and also a bit heavy in fat and calories, much more so than what I usually cook. It was a nice lockdown distraction though! May try Gousto next 🙂

CorianderBee · 26/05/2021 22:09

I'd go for Gousto. Much more selection and interesting dishes. We only had HF five times and had all the same meals several times (vegetarian)

whatwoulddexterdo · 26/05/2021 22:16

I love the hello fresh recipes but every single time I've ordered there's been ingredients missing
Some of the veg has been hardly fresh too
Wouldn't recommend

The hello fresh cookbook is ace though, I've made nearly everything

Disagree. Gousto has around 10 veg options and HF only 4-5

I found this as well- mainly issues with anything containing pork. Very very annoying, as I’d generally pick the quick meals and they’d randomly replace the ones they couldn’t supply with ones that took 45mins +.

I used it for five weeks, until my discount code was used up. I found it a really good way to get out of the chilli/bolognese/stir fry funk I’d got into, and I felt more confident trying vegetarian options etc which I wouldn’t have done before.

I wouldn’t pay full price for it though.

motogogo · 26/05/2021 22:33

Never bought the veggie meals but it's worth trying - look for a special offer, I only buy them with a discount!

Peckhampalace · 26/05/2021 23:09

We have HF now and again an enjoy them, but generally prefer simply cook- you get the ideas, recipe cards and stock /spices etc but buy the main ingredients so if you ordered then don't fancy it or plans change it can sit in the cupboard until you are ready. Main driver here was not having to think what to have and adding some variety, the actual shopping isn't the problem.

MouseholeCat · 27/05/2021 00:29

I've done HF a few times. It's really nice to have a break from having to think about meals and I've found a few dishes we both love through it.

I do find it gets repetitive quickly. The meals will often rotate, but they will use the same component parts repeatedly. I'm in the US so the regulars may be a little different to the UK, but be prepared for lots of potato wedges, poblano peppers, spring onions and sour cream watered down to a drizzling consistency!

I'd get frustrated with missing ingredients or tiny/inconsistent portions, especially with the vegetables. Say the recipe has 2 carrots for 2 servings, sometimes you'll get giant carrots, other times you'll get 2 baby carrots.

Oh and I found that the spiciness of their spicy recipes was way too bland for our tastes. They'd often give one tiny sachet of sriracha or Cholula and say "add to taste" when I'd need double to even taste the heat in the meal.

minniemoll · 04/08/2021 16:53

Hello Fresh have just sent me a link to share, giving new customers £42 off - that's about the cost of a box of five x two portion meals. I've been getting their boxes since the beginning of the year, and have enjoyed almost everything I've made (I've not been mad on the Thai ones, but I think that's just the spice mixture they use). And I've lost a stone in weight, I think because I'm not aimlessly wandering round the supermarket buying pizzas and ready meals because I wasn't organised enough to plan meals and make a list....
