What to pack for (UK) hols next week?

The weather is looking up for next week but after such a miserable few weeks I can't seem to interpret the charts well enough to decide what to pack. Such a first world problem I know.

There are four of us, 2 adults, 8 year old and 5 year old. Driving about 6 hours to her to a cottage in the lake - staying for 7 nights. Lots to pack and it all has to fit in the boot of the car. So I can't pack 7 nights of trousers and jumpers as well as 7 nights of shorts and vest tops for all 4 of us because there just isn't space 😂 I've packed mostly trousers and just one pair of shorts each at the moment but I'm worrying now - should I pack mostly shorts and only a couple of pairs of trousers??

How warm is 18 degrees anyway? Do we need hat, scarfs, gloves? Why won't my brain work???!

Is there not a washing machine in the cottage?

ShowOfHands · 26/05/2021 20:21

Is there a washing machine?

I'm packing for a week in Scotland with two dc and am planning to use the washing machine in the cottage so am only taking a maximum of 5 of any one item (underwear for example), 2 pairs of trousers each etc.

Yes to a hat, scarf and coat each.

DownRightAmazing · 26/05/2021 20:28

No, no washing machine!!

7 sets of underwear each (don't take up much room)

2 sets of nightwear each.

3 t shirts each, 3 long sleeved tops each.

2 pairs of shorts each, 2 pairs of trousers or jeans each.

Beach towels and swimming costumes (if you're going near a beach).

Trainers for all plus wellies/equivalent for all if you have them. If it turns out to be weirdly hot you can buy flip flops there.

A coat and 2 x sweatshirts/hoodies/jumpers each.

I really do hope a hat and gloves won't be necessary!

If it's really hot you can wear the shorts and t shirts and wash them all mid week.

Oh dear! I cross posted with no washing machine news. That makes things a lot harder, what sort of accommodation is this?

DownRightAmazing · 26/05/2021 20:31

My little one has SEN and needs a change of clothes everyday, the eldest can usually manage two days but muddy puddles, ketchup etc are magnetised to him.

Sounds like a mix of trousers and shorts would be sensible. I could hand wash in the sink but drying wouldn't be easy. Unless it's hot then maybe drying would be fine??

It's more like a hotel tbh

The Lake District? Weather can be changeable whatever the forecast says. I'd err on the side of caution with warm'ish gear - layers preferably so if it does warm up you can shed layers.

notsmagec · 26/05/2021 20:34

We go away next week too.. so far I'm planning on packing T-shirt's and shorts.. then hoodies and a couple of pairs of dark coloured leggings. I can throw the leggings in the sink, wash them off and dry them then as they won't get stained. I'm keeping everything crossed we won't be needing them though!

Then I'll probably put pac-a-macs in just in case 😂

denverRegina · 26/05/2021 20:37

Shorts, t shirts, hoodies, pac a macs, snoods, pjs, trackies, walking shoes, normal trainers.

That's it, job done.

Aposterhasnoname · 26/05/2021 20:40

I’m off next week too. So far I’ve packed sundresses, sandals, swimming costume, sun cream, rain coat, wellies, umbrella, jeans, jumpers, boots, parka, scarf, gloves, and I’m side eyeing my oodie.

You don’t get this problem in Greece. I miss abroad.

ZenNudist · 26/05/2021 20:56

Lakes: some grippy waterproof walking boots/ trainers. Mountain warehouse or regatta are good value for dc. Definitely need waterproof jackets and trousers apiece, a good back pack. I like sports leggings and fleeces. Could pack a nice dress for you for dinner but you can be very casual in the lakes.

Same. It would be easy to pack if we were off to the med!

We've all got good gear, waterproofs and the like, just deciding on the balance of warm and cool clothes that I'm struggling with...

You could Google to see if there is a launderette locally so you'll know if you can do washing if you need to.

denverRegina · 26/05/2021 22:12

You don't need to do washing. It's the lakes, a bit of mud really doesn't matter in the slightest.

Howmanysleepsnow · 26/05/2021 22:40

I’d plan on layering so take a pair or two of quick drying trousers/ leggings each, a pair of shorts, 7 T-shirt’s, 2 hoodies and a waterproof each (possibly double up on trousers/ shorts/ hoodies for the dc who needs clean daily). Plus walking boots, sandals and swimming costume.

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/05/2021 22:43

18 degrees is really cold definitely not shorts weather!

DownRightAmazing · 05/06/2021 21:37

Coming back to this to say we didn't need any jumpers, waterproofs, hats etc all week! We had one day when we wore our coats.

We needed more shorts though!!
