Books for early readers

DS has has a sudden jump in confidence at reading and now seems to consider himself able to read. I bought him a book for me to read to him, and he was so excited that he thought he might be able to read it, but it wasn't designed for early readers (although he gave it a good go!)

I want to get him some books that he can read, with some help, that don't look like reading books. We've got the Read with Oxford books, but they still look like reading books. I'm hoping to find something that looks like what I would read to him, but that he can read. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

He's currently confident orange book band/ Oxford level 6/ Read with Oxford level 4

I can't tell what level they are from the website but I have been considering getting the Julia Donaldson phonics readers for DS1 - because the style/pictures looks a lot like her other books and not like a school reading book.

Might be a bit too simple for your DS though (DS1 is on dark blue books which I think is before orange).

Thank you. I'll have a look - I love Julia Donaldson!

I think dark blue is ahead of orange, so even if he's not ready for it yet, it's one to keep in mind.

It's such a hard stage when - I want to encourage him with interesting things to read without putting him off with anything too difficult

The Julia Donaldson phonics series (songbirds) is equivalent to about Oxford levels 1-6 so might be a bit easy.

There is a pretty cheap set of books by “Reading Champion” which start at orange I think. The early reader “Horrid Henry” books are good too. As well as some of the dr Seuss books (the ones with a blue band on the spine in particular).

Fabulous. Thank you for the suggestions. I've tried Sam-I-Am, but not any of the other Dr Seuss ones

My daughter loved the Horrid Henry early reader series. There are also National Geographic non fiction books you can buy at different levels.

Are there two blues maybe? DS has gone - pink, red, yellow, blue.
Unless different schools/schemes use different colours?

Thank you. That's suggestions for Horrid Henry, so it's definitely on the list.

He loves the National Geographic kids magazine so I'll look out for the books

This is the order DS's school use (hope it attaches...)

There's a light blue and a dark blue (or alternatively Oxford levels, which are different to read with Oxford levels) It drove me mad during lockdown trying to find the right level for DS!
