New job and universal credit?

Hey. I have been on universal credit for 2 months, and started a new job this month so won’t be on universal credit any longer.

However, I was initially told by my employer that I will not be paid this month due to missing the payroll cut off date after starting midway through the month. I therefore thought I would receive month 2’s universal credit payment.

Found out today that my employer will partially pay me on Friday, which will reduce my universal credit payment and place me in financial hardship as I had arranged my finances around not getting paid from work this month as they previously advised.

Do you think my work would consider delaying my payment? Or is that impossible?

What's your UC cut off date? Mine is the the 26th of each month, so anything my employer pays me after that date would run into the next month's UC calculations. And if they partially pay you you might still end up receiving a reduced amount of UC in month 2 anyway :)

HeySmile thank you

annoyingly my cut off date is the 30th but my payday from work is the 29th. My universal credit would be significantly reduced unfortunately!

You shouldn't lose all your UC.. It just goes down based on your earnings. My award was reduced when I got a better paid job.. How do you know you'll lose your award completely?

It depends how much you will be paid and whether it's reported before the end of your assessment period. If you have kids then a certain amount will be disregarded from your earnings before your Uc reduces on the 63p taper. The disregard ( work allowance) will depend whether you claim the rent element or not. So the deductions for earnings may not be as bad as you thinkmaybe?

If work delayed your payment you would then likely have 2 paydays reported in your next assessment period which is more likely to reduce your Uc to nothing !

@Babyroobs yes, you’re right! I wasn’t expecting to get paid beyond the first 2 universal credit payments so that’s fine. I don’t know if work can delay payments or if that’s unheard of haha

Thanks all - I used an online calculator which suggested that the majority of my 2nd universal credit payment will be reduced. Will definitely place me in a difficult situation.

Oh no that is annoying, just by one day! But definitely better than having 2 paydays in one assessment period. I hope you can balance it out for the next month Flowers it's a horrible feeling having to rely on UC even when you're earning!
