Glasses wearers straw poll - itchy stinging eyes.

I'm getting more and more convinced that wearing glasses is causing my eyes to be red and burning.
Within 30 mins of putting them on, my eyes are sore but within 30 mins of taking them off they're better.
I've seen tons of opinions who've suggested various things but I've never mentioned this because it seems so odd.

So has anyone else had this?

Opticians not opinions

Have only had this with contact lenses, never with glasses.

Did have the wrong prescribed in one pair of glasses which gave me an awfully sore head.

SpacePotato · 25/05/2021 18:04

Do you clean them with spray or wipes? If so it could be irritating your eyes.

Do you suffer from hayfever?

If you're prescription is out it shouldn't make your eyes red and itchy, just eye strain and headaches.

Try taking an antihistamine and see if it stops it.

I clean them with soap and water then an ecloth Space
An optician said to try antihistamines but I took them for a month and they did nothing.

I'd try a different antihistamine. It could be something you're using on your face or hair that is on the glasses/that the lenses are stopping from dissipating. For me, cetirizine does nothing, but loratidine works. Generic are fine and much cheaper than branded.

I have this issue, and I feel it is to do with having to wear a mask.

CalamityJaneway · 25/05/2021 23:36

I always get this, in my case I assume its from wearing contact lenses for too long, not drinking enough water and staring at screens from morning till 2am on mumsnet night

NoseOfJericho · 26/05/2021 00:00

My last pair of glasses were plastic frames, they seemed to make my eyes sore.

I wash my glasses in sensitive unperfumed washing up liquid but still made no difference.

I Googled it and at the time it appeared I wasn't alone. Had plastic frames in the past but nothing like the irritation these caused. Not worn them since.

StarlightLady · 26/05/2021 05:59

Sounds more like hay fever to me.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/05/2021 06:03

I agree with the hay fever suggestion. I wear glasses and in the morning my eyes start stinging but I tend to get up and shower without putting my glasses on so I know they aren't causing it.

Oversize · 26/05/2021 06:09

I get it year round so I don't think it's hay fever.
I've tried both types of antihistamine and neither help.
I think I'll ask whether laser surgery is possible and hope that'll solve it. Or steroid drops.

I get this sensation but it’s not related to glasses. For me it’s related to screen time. Have you tried hycosan drops? They are great. Also cold tea bags!

Oversize · 26/05/2021 06:16

I use the Hycosan Dual 4 times daily. I suppose it could be screen time. I wear varifocals so the glasses don't just go on for reading. Starting Friday, I'll have a great opportunity to see what effect 5 days with hardly any screen time has.

There are more than two types of antihistamine - a quick look on the NHS website shows there are 5 or 6. I have hayfever and think I have an allergic reaction to more than one type of pollen, etc so I have symptoms much of the year.

I would also look at the ingredients in everything you are using on your face and head and try making some changes to see if that makes a difference.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 26/05/2021 10:36

You could consider using opticrom eye drops instead of an oral antihistamine, I find it very effective when my hayfever affects my eyes

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/05/2021 10:41

It was suggested that I buy something called Eye Bag, after I had cataracts removed. It is soothing, as is any type of eye mask.
I have some wipes called Occusoft too.
