Do I lose weight before trying again for a baby?

Just had our 6th miscarriage and my mum said I should try and lose weight before trying again has anyone managed to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy whilst being very overweight? Or would you agree that a year off dieting hard will help me? I'm 19 stone.

I'm so sorry that you keep having miscarriages. Are you having any investigations in to them? Flowers

I was 15st when I conceived my second. 13st with my first, a year earlier. Both healthy babies/children now.

Yeah I went to the infertility clinic and the dr said I needed to lose weight before he would order the tests and then covid happened. I have gone from 25 stone to 19 stone over 2020 but I will admit I got a bit bored so I stopped and got pregnant which felt miraculous

6 stone weight loss is amazing, well done. I think if the doctor has said you need to lose more weight before he will do the tests, then you should do so. How much weight has he told you to lose?

I would say to get to the bmi under 30 margin would give you better odds of maintaining the pregnancy if still unsuccessful then IVF would be an option, to be considered for IVF you would need to lose weight anyway

My BMI was 30 with my most recent pregnancy do just what they class as a concern. I found the pregnancy far more physically challenging in terms of hip and back pain, breathlessness and recovery than my previous pregnancies which I was a stone lighter.
Even looking beyond conception and early pregnancy any further weight loss can only be a good thing and help you enjoy the experience.

I'm really sorry for your losses.

I don't understand why your doctor won't order the tests - whilst of course a healthy weight is ideal for fertility, there could be another obvious cause that's unrelated to your weight that could well be worth knowing about... could you see another doctor or go private?

I think you need to ask a doctor. An obstetrician friend once told me that for some women with a high BMI, the extra fat can act like an organ, creating a sort of synthetic hormone which can make miscarriage more likely. I can't remember the exact explanation, but a medic (or Dr Google) will be able to explain it better than I have.
