Hello, I've had this tiny lump on my eye for a year or more. Never bothered me except I feel a slight pressure on that eye. It's recently got a little swollen and red... does anyone has anyone has similar? I have a telephone appt with the GP in 3 weeks but am a bit worried and curious!

Maybe an optical appointment might be quicker?

joystir59 · 24/05/2021 21:49

Get yourself to Specsavers asap. It's a joke waiting for go appointments

Elouera · 24/05/2021 21:51

It might be a very early pterygium. If you google, most pictures are more advanced though and look much more severe. It can be caused from UV exposure- lack of proper sunglasses, outdoors alot etc. Do get it checked though as might be something else. I agree, an optician would be able to see you within 3 weeks!

Thank you everyone, I'll give Specsavers a ring tomorrow.

I had one similar on my eye. Was referred to moor fields clinic by my optician.
It was monitored for several years to check it wasn't growing but it was decided it didn't need operating on and was a 'freckle' on my eye.

Pinguecula? If it has started irritating you then you will need to see someone about it.

Don't forget to protect your eyes from UV rays and wear sunnies

CarpeVitam · 24/05/2021 22:42

I had similar many years ago. Was surprised when the GP said it was a stye as didn't know you could get them on your eyeball! 🤷‍♀️

Numnumcookie · 24/05/2021 22:51

Possible phylcten? Any allergies?
Could be bacterial. Definitely see optometrist, it'll be a lot quicker. Ask for a Minor Eye Care Service appointment - if you're registered with a local gp it should be free and they should see you in 5 days or find someone who can.

ThatsNotTheTHunty · 24/05/2021 23:21

Looks like Pinguecula.
I'm no Optician or Doctor but I'd phone them optician. After all they're doctors of the eyes.

I hope you get it sorted.

update just in case anyone comes across this thread in the future with a similar problem. I called Specsavers this morning and they asked me to email the photos. They called me back to say it is a Pinguecula. Harmless. To use lubricating eye drops if it feels irritated and to wear sunglasses to protect from uv rays. She said they are really common and won't go away.

I'm glad they put your mind at ease and that it seems to fairly minor BUT - personally, I'd still be making a face to face opticians appointment as I'm not sure how thorough a phone call can truly be.
No harm in keeping a regular check on it and a regular eye test never hurt anyone.

Also, in my experience Specsavers were a bit rubbish and I felt far more cared for when I started going to my local independent opticians. Horses for courses though, the main thing is having it looked at.

joystir59 · 25/05/2021 15:52

Glad you got it sorted so quickly, and that it's harmless @Marblerunfun

joystir59 · 25/05/2021 15:53

I find Specsavers very thorough and conscientious- I have to have regular checks for a 'freckle' on my retina.

Ah, maybe it's just the one near me.
I wanted to have an extra eye test between my usual two-yearly appointments because of a noticeable decline in vision. Specsavers wouldn't even entertain seeing me because I wasn't due a test, even when I explained why - I pay in full for my glasses etc so absolutely no reason for it.
I went to my local independent instead and there was indeed a further problem. It wasn't life threatening or anything but I was pissed off that Specsavers treated me like that and never went back 🤷🏽‍♀️

WaltzingToWalsingham · 25/05/2021 16:23

Just wanted to say what a lovely colour your eyes are, OP! They are the colour of the Mediterranean.

Marblerunfun · 26/05/2021 09:29

@WaltzingToWalsingham Thank you for the lovely compliment, that's made my morning Smile

Specsavers are all franchises. They vary a lot.

It's definitely a pingeculae OP. A pterygium crosses into the cornea.

Wrennie24 · 26/05/2021 10:18

Glad it's been sorted and btw you have beautiful eyes.
