Fitbit skin irritation

CaviarAndCigarettes · 24/05/2021 18:57

I bought a Fitbit blaze second hand and loved it, but three weeks later I began to develop skin irritation directly behind the casing and also where the buckle of the strap sat,
Took it off for a few months, not intentional I just forgot about it. I put it on today and the irritation is back only six hours later, exactly where it was previously. I'm amazed at how quickly it has escalated this time!

I am sensitive to some metals and tend to stick to platinum (which explains my distinct lack of jewellery) I just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same?

I did after a couple of years of wearing my FitBit. I contacted them and sent pictures of my wrist (it looked like a burn) and they sent a label fir me to return it. They asked how much I’d paid for it and sent me the money via PayPal. I then bought a garmin instead.

WinterBerry7 · 24/05/2021 19:45

Mine did this at the start but I was wearing it pretty much 24/7 (used it to monitor my sleep). Now I only wear it for work really and it’s stopped.

UhtredRagnarson · 24/05/2021 19:46

The nickel in the charging port caused irritation for me (and many others) I get round it by putting a bit of tape over it. Haven’t have any irritation from the buckle.

Fwiw it’s pretty shitty from Fitbit IMO that their watch is causing so many people to have this problem.

alahsbeje · 24/05/2021 19:47

I had this problem too, had to stop using it

Charteta · 24/05/2021 19:48

Yep I had this, had to keep it relatively loose, I also painted the buckle with clear nail varnish

HeartShapedBalloon · 24/05/2021 19:48

This happened with my old Fitbit a couple of years ago. I had to buy a fabric strap off Amazon in the end. The newer model isn't as bad, it only reacts occasionally and only then if I'm really sweaty and it's on too tight.

Timeforabiscuit · 24/05/2021 19:49

Me too, switched to garmin.

RoyalFestivitea · 24/05/2021 19:50

It's a nickel allergy. The only way around it is to make sure none of the metal bits touch your skin. You used to be able to get silicone covers to go over the buckle. For the back I've heard of people painting them.

Shouldbedoing · 24/05/2021 19:51

It could be that the fitbit has a cheap replacement strap as you bought it 2nd hand. You could try purchasing a leather strap and change wrists?

Th1me · 24/05/2021 19:57

Clear nail polish in the parts that touch your skin. Quick, easy, cheap and it works.

RedheadReadsReddit · 24/05/2021 20:02

I had this and it was the charging ports. Tried putting tape over it etc, but in the end I just gave up and got a samsung galaxy watch. No issues with it.

APJ1 · 24/05/2021 20:02

I had the same issue with my Fitbit Charge and putting nail polish on it didn't make a difference.

IhaveaBigBum · 24/05/2021 20:05

Same issue only it caused eczema on both wrists and then it spread on the back of my hand. Been over 6 months now and I can't get rid of it. Looks awful

Blackopal · 24/05/2021 20:06

I had the same problem, I swapped the strap to a metal one and it's been fine since.
I don't think I was allergic to nickel, seemed more like the plasticy strap and lack of air getting to the skin.

Justonedayatatime11 · 24/05/2021 20:33

My Fitbit versa lite burnt my wrist so badly it left blisters. I complained to them via Resolver 2 weeks ago and have heard nothing

CaviarAndCigarettes · 24/05/2021 20:59

@Shouldbedoing I already replaced the strap for a leather genuine Fitbit one before wearing it sadly.
Im relieved to know I'm not the only one, although it's a bit of a pain with the allergens.

Did anyone move to an Apple Watch? Are they any better? I'm reluctant to part with more money for a potential fail

I had to stop wearing mine because it irritated my skin.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 24/05/2021 21:03

@IhaveaBigBum ouch that sounds painful. I'm so sorry

My most recent Fitbit causes me excema irritation on my wrist where the strap sits. I don't usually keep the plastic strap on though and swap it for a fabric strap.

It subsides when I've had it off for a day or so - I don't wear it at night.

Thelnebriati · 24/05/2021 21:12

Nickel allergy is very common so I'm surprised they used it. You can paint the nickel that touches your skin with a few coats of nail polish.

LadyDanburysCane · 25/05/2021 14:32

I don’t know about the Apple Watch but I switched to a Garmin watch and wear it nearly 24/7 with no adverse reaction.

Hooplawho · 25/05/2021 15:07

Yep same for me with Fitbit,m - swapped to a garmin with silicone strap and no issues at all

GillianAnderson · 25/05/2021 15:19

I had this on my first FitBit, not had an issue on my current one
