Daughters birthday and one of the 10 kiddies is vegan.

So it’s my daughter’s birthday and just found out one of the kiddies is vegan.

I’ve already booked the birthday cake and it’s not vegan plus most of the food ideas are not vegan.

What should I do? Is it ok just to get a couple of vegan cupcakes or something because I can’t change cake now?

Vegan cupcakes sounds lovely.

Could you do a plate with vegan wraps, crisps, fruit?

imbeingtakenoverbythefear · 24/05/2021 17:34

Some treat foods are accidentally vegan such as Oreos and party rings so you could add plenty of them to the table

Ilovemaisie · 24/05/2021 17:34

Just talk to the child's parents to ask what the child would eat. They might be happy to provide food themselves because they can guarantee it's 100% vegan.

Oggs cupcakes are vegan and very nice. Asda, Sainsburys or Waitrose.
Hummous, pitta, veg sticks is an easy option. Vegan cheese is in most supermarkets now (violife is good).

I’m vegan and my kids are too young yet but once they start going to parties I will be hoping the hosts don’t stress about it.

Have you spoken to the parents? I think most vegan parents send food with their kids (any of those I know do anyway). It would be lovely to have a vegan cupcake for the child. If you had a chance, fruit and crisps as a pp said, or hummus and breadsticks. Or if you’re doing cocktail sausages, maybe a veggie sausage for that child?

Obviously not all of those suggestions are necessary, maybe just one or two. But I don’t think the parents will expect anything anyway. You’re very kind to think of the vegan child. Hope your daughter has a lovely party!

One of DDs best friends has a dairy allergy so always do vegan food for her as it's dairy-free. I do vegan cupcakes as an alternative to the birthday cake, use dairy-free spread on sandwiches & have lots of naturally vegan food such as fruit/veg platters; Pom Bear type crisps, Oreo's, party rings or specific vegan treats.

Mrsjayy · 24/05/2021 17:45

Ah dont stress I remember years ago one of my Dds friends had a few allergies so any party food had to be vegan. Do wraps Waitrose is imo the easiest for cupcakes and party rings are vegan and crisps obviously.ask her parents what she likes too.

lastqueenofscotland · 24/05/2021 17:50

Some vegan cupcakes are fine
There are plenty of accidentally vegan foods that aren’t expensive, party rings, chips, pitta/crudités and dip, etc
If you are having buffet type food keep a plate back for this child as what I’ve found from experience is everyone dives into the veggie/vegan stuff leaving the actual veggie/vegan with fuck all to eat.

Noshowlomo · 24/05/2021 17:52

Tescos does amazing vegan food- the Wicked Kitchen range cupcakes are unreal. Also could do some vegan quorn sarnies, carrots/cuc and houmous, party rings, bit of fruit, vegan pizza x

picturesandpickles · 24/05/2021 17:56

Another one saying please don;t worry - you are doing the right thng to think of something nice. As long as there are some vegan cakes you won;t go too far wrong!

You can get vegan jelly, we always use that.

BikeRunSki · 24/05/2021 17:59

Crisps are not necessarily vegan- especially not cheese flavour.

Look for dairy free labelling, then check for animal fats.

katy1213 · 24/05/2021 18:06

The child isn't vegan - she'd probably love to be let loose on the sausage rolls.

That is a really ignorant post.
Xyzzzzz · 24/05/2021 18:11

I’d speak to the parents and see what she likes from the supermarket. Maybe make her a plate up and then get some vegan cakes.

Vodkaandballoon · 24/05/2021 18:14

You can't change the cake so some vegan cupcakes perfect. I would just do all vegan food. Pretty easy these days (Tesco has a good range). That way no one feels singled out & you can relax & not have to police the food.

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 24/05/2021 18:15

We've just been in the same situation and bought the wicked cupcakes from Tesco as mentioned by PP, they were absolutely delicious!

My DD has allergies so often eats vegan as it's easier to explain! I would always offer to take food for DD, and would never expect the cake to be vegan. Either make clear which food is vegan with labels, or plate up something in advance and give to the friend. A vegan cupcake always goes down well with DD but I wouldn't expect it and I always set DDs expectations that there might not be something suitable for her at the party so she might need to wait until she gets home (never an issue if I have something waiting at home in advance!)

Ted27 · 24/05/2021 18:34

www.goodto.com/food/food-news/vegan-food-list-5513

this has a list of every day supermarket products which are vegan, including lots of party/snack food.
PETA also has a list.

My otherwise carnivore son would go for a Gregg vegan sausage roll rather than the meat one

Wanttocryatthecost · 24/05/2021 18:36

Just do a little separate party bag/box with vegan bits in for her. Ask her parents what’s the best things to give her. There are lots of vegan options in the supermarkets these days. My DD eats a lot of vegan options due to dairy allergies she has yogurt, cheese, chocolate, cupcakes, little cartons of soya chocolate milk....

I took my DDs and their friends on a day trip a few years ago, I just did individual paper bags with the foods each one liked/was allowed to eat.

RichTeaCheddars · 24/05/2021 18:45

Although yes, that post is rather ignorant it might be true! My brother's friend was vegetarian but always ate non vege options when at our house/parties. My mum did check with his Mum though and she had admitted defeat and he only ate vege at home. but maybe this child's patents are strict. Point is, provide the vegan food, point it out to the child but you can't really stop them eating other food unless for allergies.

My friend's veggie daughter used to sneak into the neighbour's house and eat their cold ham. Grin
ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 24/05/2021 19:12

As others have already mentioned, lots of snack food/convenience food is accidentally vegan so you may already have vegan food planned without realising it.

If you tell us what food you had in mind we could let you know if any of it is vegan.

Oblomov21 · 24/05/2021 19:21

Do not panic OP. This is so easily solvable with minimal drama. There are so many vegan cupcakes, foods and choices in every supermarket local to me. A few bits, and she'll be most grateful.
