Call on mobile phone from nearly my phone no

Calls coming through on my mobile. The number displayed of the person calling is very nearly my number or DP’s number. Obviously it’s a scam, but what are they trying to achieve?

I had the same happen. Missed a call from a number which was mine bar from the last digit. I rang back and I guy answered. Said he absolutely hadn't rang me and checked his call log. He too was perplexed at the numbers being nearly identical. Very odd!

I've had so many of these recently. Then they stopped. I think it's cloning or spoofing. So I think someone 'steals' a phone number for a short amount of time.

It's really disconcerting. I tried ringing one back and it just did not connect (three rapid beeps). Then tried the next day and it connected but I hung up as assumed it would connect to the rightful owner of the number.

Weirdly I had a call from a woman who demanded who had called her from my number and wouldn't believe me when I said I hadn't - so I think I had been spoofed/cloned too.

It's really hard to work out. DH also getting them.

I’ve had several of these calls too in the last couple of days. Numbers have been same code as mine and same first three/four digits of my mobile number. I’m not answering them so no idea what they’re about!

Me too - I've had 3 different numbers call all from very similar number

There was a 'call my number neighbour' trend a couple of years back, maybe it's coming back?

Apparently, there is software available that makes the number called from very similar to the number being called. The aim of this is to make you more likely to answer the phone, since you think you recognise the number or it is familiar to you.

@WaltzingToWalsingham this sounds plausible as I answered it the first time because it looked familiar!
