What do you always end up throwing away in your house?

In our household we can’t seem to get through a packet of raspberries or beansprouts without them going off.

Fancied some raspberries this morning and half of them are covered in furry mould and the other half are just brown mush. They were only bought on Friday night!

I’ve realised we quite often throw raspberries away so I think I probably won’t bother in future unless it’s for something specific.

Potatoes Confused

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/05/2021 14:43

Corn on the cobs! I never, ever get around to using them.

Also, spinach and coriander. Mainly because the bags are massive and I just dont need that much ever. Ive just planted my own coriander because I got so annoyed by it.

FiveGs · 24/05/2021 14:44

Bananas (always thinking I'll bake with them if they get too brown but never do)
Salad leaves, make that leftover salad in general
Hummus (live in the ME and the supermarket pots are massive so I get hummus'd out)
Mango pieces (see above)

I'm trying hard not to be wasteful, but buying in bulk sizes is quite common and it's just me and DH.. she says Smile

DisgruntledPelican · 24/05/2021 14:44

Aubergines and spinach

bettertimesarecomingnow · 24/05/2021 14:45

Bread
Corn on the cob
Leftover tubs like coleslaw
Milk - never get through it before it goes off

TroysMammy · 24/05/2021 14:46

Mascarpone. I haven't a clue why I buy it in the first place.

TroysMammy · 24/05/2021 14:48

I have just thrown out an unopened tub best before 23 March 2021.

CompleteBarstool · 24/05/2021 14:48

Bags of mixed salad (or half of the bag anyway)

I buy the bags as I like the variety but always end up with them turning to sludge before I eat it all

I had this problem until I started buying the filtered stuff. Its truly amazing (milk btw) Its in the solid white bottle and tastes no different to regular milk.
BrilliantBetty · 24/05/2021 14:49

Salad leaves.

FizzyPink · 24/05/2021 14:49

Fresh herbs. I never come across a recipe yet that calls for even half of the bags they come in.
Potatoes.
Bags of salad.

Fnib · 24/05/2021 14:50

I try really hard not to waste any food, but if I do, it tends to be lettuce as DH insists on buying it bagged Hmm
I also just admitted to binning some batch cooked meals that I'd stored in freezer bags over a year ago (they've got a plastic taint) So there's that too, but it's not going to be happening again as I've learnt from my mistake.
My solution to food waste is to make a big vat of soup the day before the weekly shop.

RhubarbTea · 24/05/2021 14:51

Bananas, I forget them and then they go brown and too sugary.
Spinach in bags
Baby plum tomatoes as they get mouldy pretty fast

ZenNudist · 24/05/2021 14:56

Hummus

Gatehouse77 · 24/05/2021 14:59

Beansprouts
Herbs
Easy peelers
Occasionally, potatoes

Definitely not as much when DS1 is here as he cooks late at night as is really good at using up bits and pieces.

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/05/2021 15:02

Pineapples. Which is really annoyingly because I love pineapple.

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/05/2021 15:07

When bananas go brown, put them in the freezer (ideally peeled and chopped into about 4 pieces). They make the best banana cake/bread, or can be blitzed in smoothies/ice cream.
When they get beyond the stage of eating, I leave them until they're REALLY brown before freezing. When I've got 4 in the freezer, I make a cake!

Things like spinach, milk, tomatoes... are your fridges cold enough? Spinach easily lasts a week in ours, tomatoes more than that, and milk would definitely go a couple of days over the stated date (rarely gets to that point). I noticed a real difference when we got a new fridge - our old one was turned up to max coldness, but the new one must be colder - things keep for AGES in it!

Serpenta · 24/05/2021 15:08

If you eat spinach raw there is far too much per bag, if you cook your spinach they could do with putting some more in the bags.

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/05/2021 15:11

@Serpenta - Spinach is usually dual-sited in the supermarket for this reason. Great big bags with veg (for cooking, often unwashed), and much smaller bags (usually baby leaf and often washed) with the bagged salad.
The price /g is much higher for the latter, but may work out better value if you usually throw away some of the big bag.

Mochudubh · 24/05/2021 15:14

Cucumber, I always think I'll put it in a side salad but I don't like it cold straight from the fridge and never take it out in time for the chill to wear off so it stays in the fridge till it goes squishy then gets chucked out.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/05/2021 15:17

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

When you open your bag of salad leaves, put a piece of kitchen roll in the bag on one side between the bag and leaves, and do the same the other side. It absorbs the moisture which causes it to go to mush and buys you an extra few days of decent salad leaves.

You are all welcome

Mydogisagentleman · 24/05/2021 15:18

Very little.
My DH is a dustbin.
I think the only thing that I consistently throw away is cucumber. I buy half a one every week and overlook it.
Probably the only thing DH can’t incorporate into one of his throw it all in the frying pan meals

Amrapaali · 24/05/2021 15:19

Hummus here too. It's bizarre we used to get through tubs of the stuff. But I've binned it at least 3 or 4 times now without the seal being opened. We've lost the hummus love I think...

MackenCheese · 24/05/2021 15:19

Half a bag of salad
Half a bag of kale
Half a bag of green beans
Half a sweet pepper
Depressing isn't it?

JobRetentionScheme · 24/05/2021 15:24

Freeze raspberries when they are fresh .... they are nice to eat frozen or take half an hour to defrost. I do the same with strawberries and blueberries... lovely in hot porridge with maple syrup.

And I freeze bananas when they are too ripe and use in flapjacks or cakes.

But I still throw out too much !
