Are we becoming frumpy in the name of comfort?

I am finding shopping for nice dresses, skirts and tops harder and harder. If you want something you can wear during the daytime, most dresses out there are dire. The necklines are really high (I don't need to put my boobs on show but what's with the high necklines, even V ones?), the hems are long, the sleeves large and shapeless.

What happened to fitted dresses? Not clingy - just fitted, smart even. What happened to pretty skirts? What's with that terribly unflattering midi length? And don't get me started on pleated skirts!

It seems clothing manufacturers are designing with comfort in mind while style has gone out of the window. Of course style is subjective and I'm not saying I'd like to wear heels every day, but I'm not 50 yet, have a decent figure, and don't want to hide it under stuff that resembles a tent. Anyone else?

The slim 25 year olds look great in pleated skirts etc.
On me .... Old and frumpy 😂

I think its a response to the super clingy body con dresses/slim fit everything, with shape wear to smooth out lines.

Plus the clothes to work from home thing. Give it until next autumn and everyone goes back to work, clothed might get tighter and more fitted again.

I love a pleated skirt. On someone else.
Wantedd a silver onefor ages. Tried one on. Say Hello to my mum tum everyone!!

Fitted stuff is more flattering on me.everyhtjbg loose looks maternity.

Glad to see it's not just me thinking pleated skirts look horrendous on most people. Hopefully @MargosKaftan is right and we will see more fitted, tailored clothing out again.

I agree! I can't find anything that I like as everything is loose and frumpy looking. I don't want skin-tight clothing, just something slim fitted with a more fitted shape.

I’m 50 - oh the horror Hmm - and didn’t suddenly feel the need to wear frumpy clothes and/or a tent. I’m hoping it came out wrong, but the ageism is a bit unnecessary. Age is just a number - it’s not a uniform.

Meh, it's just that the current mainstream fashion doesn't suit you!

I'm on the other side of the coin, slim fitting floaty midi-dresses are perfect for me. I'm short of leg so they finish at a slim part of my calf but aren't so long they need taking up. The silhouette flatters my big boob, small waist, big bum figure without making me look like I'm auditioning for a naughties r&b music video (looking at you body con dresses).

Clothes are just awful. I look like a scruff constantly. Dresses are either super short or long. I'm short and fat, so I look like I accidentally stepped into a floral tent if I wear a maxi dress.

Also all the dropped waists and tiers. Some of them look like a textile project where they've made it too short, so just sewn an extra strip round.

So much floral. Or if you find something plain, it has puffy sleeves or a frilly neck...or both.

Smart tops are also the worst. I have a comparatively long torso, so lots end up a bit short. Again with florals, frills and runching.
