Sorry, didn’t know where to post and I have no clue about these things.

Someone I know has just been given a prison sentence, I know I can send letters but am I able to send anything else? Food...books...photos etc?

I'm not sure about food but books, consoles & games ect can be sent in. From my experience it took a few days from me sending things in for my friend to get them. They have to check everything. Letters are opend in front of the person also. I'd sent in a rather stuffed envelope (photos, poems & a huge letter) sellotaped closed. It made my friends week watching the officer trying to open it. So I did the same thing every week. Thankfully my friend was only in a few months or I would have ran out of ideas to post in. But it made a huge difference to my friends mental health while he was in.

Prow best to contact the prison and ask directly. They should have a guide.

Different types of prisons have different rules based on a variety of factors, best thing is to contact the prison they are in and ask

My understanding is that books are now permitted, but worth checking. The ban introduced by Chris Grayling (the worst cabinet minister of all time in my view) was ended by Michael Gove when he took over as Justice Secretary.

Thank you, I am very worried about his mental health and how he will cope so if there’s anything I can send to make him smile will hopefully help a little. I’m not even sure what to write in a letter, I guess just talk about what’s going on and let him know we all support him. He is a gamer so I’m hoping he will have access to a console, I will try and find a book to send him and send some photos.

I have looked online and it says I can send money, I’m guessing they can use this to buy food, magazines etc..

I did a bit of voluntary work in a prison. Dictionaries were particularly valued and books generally were very popular. Some of the men had a DVD player, which I think were their own property, but might be worth checking if that would be allowed. Or perhaps a very basic MP3 player loaded with songs - but it would have to be one with no possibility of internet connectivity.

Prisonersfamilies.org has lots of advice

Nothing that needs the Internet. Also be aware that things do get stolen in prison. You could be putting him at risk by having nice stuff.
